Airport Express not recognized- please help :(

I've been using an Airport Express for wifi in my apartment. All of a sudden, the base station just isn't recognized at all by either my computer (MBP) or my roommates (dell)
When I try configuring it through ethernet I just get error messages...isn't this thing supposed to just work once it's plugged into a modem? The modem and internet connection still workks...
any help at all appreciated.

    Maybe we need more information. When you connect to it with Ethernet cable, in what way is it not working? And what are the error messages?
