Playing the spade/heart flush deck, getting the joker that makes planets and planet packs free, and getting your first Jupiter around Ante 8 is quite insanity inducing.
While I'm doing great with the flush deck, Purple difficulty is absolutely murdering me.
The amount of times that I get a Polychrome joker that will die after a while has been uncountable.
I have the impression that the game becomes more difficult the more jokers you unlock, because you get a lot of coins/mult jokers.
This can result in not getting past the first boss if he decids to halve coins & mult, and you haven't got a planet or points-joker.
Most fun combination I had was Midas Mask (face cards become gold) and Vampire (get +0.2 Mult when he removes the enchantment from a card), and a Queen Mult 13 joker after a Spectral card decided to change a bunch of cards to Queens. About half my deck was queens, and the vampire was very happy about that.
Most insane run was getting the Skip Blind +0.25 Mult joker, skipping a blind which gave me a spectral pack which had the duplicate-joker-destroy-all-the-others, so I got 2 skip-blinders, defeating the Ante 1 boss and getting the Blueprint (copy rjoker to the right). As a result I decided to be idiotic and skip every possible blind, getting to an Ante 8 boss that decided to shuffle all my jokers. But all my jokers were xMult
Didn't survive blind 9.
I haven't managed to gather $400, or get to ante 12 yet. That stuff is brutal, and RNGesus can be very fickle at times...
Oh, yeah there are other decks that are definitely bigger challenges than red/blue, or at least are high risk high reward.
I'd say the easiest ones (that you can unlock early) are like yellow, checkered, and abandoned.
but you didn't get to start with them which adds a bit of early difficult y

I managed to get the $400 unlock with I think the green deck. It took several tries since you have to have enough money economy to amass a bunch of wealth while still having enough good jokers and spending enough that you can survive long enough to do so. Tarot packs and purple seals were key between hermits and temperance. I think I just barely managed to hit it on the last blind I was able to clear with a hermit from a pack.
edit: also I had to go endless to do it. Which occurred to me late in the run TBH. I was at like, Ante 7 and stressing before I was like, wait I should be able to at least clear 9 with what I've got going on and Endless still counts for unlocks.
My personal favourite joker (for the flush deck) is the "castle" joker, the one that gives coins for discarding cards. Because you only have 2 suits in that deck, you always have a kind of discard-suit, and a play-suit.
In one game I had racked up more than 500 coins with that joker, so you, I lik it a lot
Posting this here as well, because this seems like something completely obvious but I somehow missed it and it should help other newbies:
+3 MULT is very different from X3 MULT. One will add 3 to your current mult, the other will multiply your mult by 3.
I was wondering why a legendary joker was X3 MULT compared to my common +10 MULT.
This same fact is why it's also really important to make sure you're ordering your jokers appropriately.
Yep, you want your additive mult sources before your multiplicative sources.
For similar reasons, that joker that makes your first triggered face card give x2 mult is kind of mediocre. It means you generally need to move your first face card as far right as possible so that any sources of mult that come from cards triggering go before it, as it will trigger before most jokers get applied so the bonus isn't as effective. It can be helpful if you play a hand with a large base mult, but it's still not great.
Oh wow, you have to also order your hand to maximize this effect. E.g. you have face cards give X2 multiplier, before you play your hand, you must drag the card to the right so it applies to the end.
Oh wow, you have to also order your hand to maximize this effect. E.g. you have face cards give X2 multiplier, before you play your hand, you must drag the card to the right so it applies to the end.
Yeah, so if you have mult cards you want those to trigger before glass cards or cards with xMult on trigger from Jokers. And you want your +mult jokers before your xMult jokers.
You can also reorder your jokers between hands, which I made use of a few times when I had a joker that copied effects of other jokers. Like in my 2s deck I mentioned up thread, I had a joker that gave a +chips bonus, which permanently increased every time a 2 was scored. And I had a card that made 2s retrigger. So I might on one hand play 4 2s with red seals, and put the joker in the position where it duplicates the retrigger card, causing all the 2s to permanently boost the other joker more times. Then on the next hand I shift it over to my biggest mult joker to hit the score required to win the blind.
I think the only meta unlocks are the vouchers? Getting better vouchers in the pool absolutely makes runs easier, but ultimately it’s still random if you get your new and better vouchers.

re: ordering jokers, you can even do things like drag one that copies the joker next to it from one that is multiplying your score over to one that affects your payout after scoring the points but before the payout triggers
Haven't messed around yet with trying to copy a +mult trigger and then switching it next to a xmult one to copy both

I don't think this works...
You can move them around once scoring starts but the order they trigger in is fixed, i messed with that during my three vampire run.
Though moving them between scoring a hand and end-of-round triggers I've never tried, that's pretty fun that it works.

I really like the green deck, but I hate the interest mechanic and think it's actively dumb. So green deck is great, because it's just piles of cash for good plays.
Well, right after I made that post, I absolutely destroyed a run with the Green deck.
Of course, all the work was done by this sick bastard:
Fed the mad Joker each round and basically had to adjust to my new life after seeing what it consumed. For a solid 10-12 rounds, I had the Joker that gives you +20 for only playing 3 cards or less before it got eaten. I was shredding with single hands and getting huge money. Finally sputtered out when the Big Blind was like 7.2 million.
Then I found the 50% off everything in the store Voucher and the reroll the boss Voucher giving me a lot of breathing room.

With my new found knowledge, I won with a deck that net me a 1 million point hand.
Got a vampire early in, so I started to feed it, and then got the "copies the joker to the right" card and a polychrome joker for fibonacci. In the end, I had the vampire up to 8x multiplier so I had a cool 16x base.
Got up to ante 11 with that, mostly because I didn't have a reliable way to create chips. I often had my multi at 2500.
Woo! Had my first proper silly numbers deck with these jokers:
- Each tarot used permanently adds to multiplier.
- Each hand played while on less than three dollars makes a tarot.
- Vampire.
And a blueprint for extra fun. Every hand was making two tarot most of the game which meant I had vast amounts of special cards to feed the vamp. Had to move the blueprint to be copying the vampire eventually of course.
Didn’t reach scientific notation but got me up to a top round score of over a billion.
I thought, with the sheer amount of Balatro I've watched, I'd be good at this game. I even won my first run!
I've lost every single other run since then, like 20 or so. Hell, in like 5 or 6 runs tonight I never made it past ante 3 what the fuck happened

I've lost every single other run since then, like 20 or so. Hell, in like 5 or 6 runs tonight I never made it past ante 3 what the fuck happened
I'm still figuring out if the game is too "Go big or go home". Right now i'd summarize my take on the game as "The wise man knows they know absolutely fuck all" - i just haven't played it enough to really get a good a good feel for things.
I am feeling like base multiplier cards are a trap , planets are really good if you can hit the hand you want consistently, and multiply the entire multiplier cards are really, really good. Buying playing card boosters is really strong, since you tend to get upgraded cards in some shape or form. Joker boosters seem like the worst?
You can get murdered pretty easily by the game if it decides to give you no point-scoring jokers during the first 2 antes, and then plonks a "all base coins and mult are halved" or "lose 1 level of rank"" boss down.
That last one is especially vicious as it can bring your lvl. to 0 (I believe this is patched on PC, but I am a console player) which means in basically no score.
Also, the "very large blind" boss, which has a 4x more score target than the big blind before it, has killed me many times...

Joker boosters aren't great late game unless you have an open slot and cash you don't need to hold on to. They're not often worth selling an existing joker to open a slot unless you have some real trash jokers you don't mind lose anything by ditching. Like the ones that start strong but lose power every round if they're near end of life, or have a bunch of commons which don't necessarily give you a strong build. Etc
But they're a good option (along with the tarot that makes one) if you have the slots, since the price of the regular pack is 4, which is as cheap or cheaper than almost every joker, and it gives your choice of at least 3, of potentially any rarity (other than maybe legendary, don't know if those can show up in packs once unlocked or only from soul cards) as well as with enhancements.

This card can get stupidly silly at higher difficulties. You eventually have to contend with random jokers getting the eternal (can't be sold or destroyed) trait. I had 4 of them and then Madness as the last one. It was just an ever increasing multiplier. I got the telescope voucher as well so that became a super solid source. Not my most insane run, but it let me bully my way pretty high.
I could see the occasional eternal joker being really nice in those circumstances since my one run with madness eventually petered out because I wasn't able get anything going except for madness.
Yorick so far is the worst feeling legendary i've got, simply because he's a dead card for a very long time. Great if you can actually activate him, but 23 feels like it's just too many discards to ask.
Chicot (disable boss blinds): You cannot afford a slot that does absolutely nothing lategame, and most builds that are devastated by a specific boss blind have better ways to pivot than using a joker slot.
Canio (1x mult whenever a face card is destroyed): Too inconsistent, requiring you to have not focused on face cards and to have strong hand sculpting tools available that are probably already winning the run for you. Really cracked if you do get it with the joker that lets you discard a single card to destroy it, though.
Yorick (5x mult after 23 discards): Basically 5x mult on a 2.33 ante delay. If you get it early it's great, if you get it late you can't sacrifice the slot to get it online. Anti-synergy with some solid early game keep-your-discard jokers still hurts it.
Triboulet (Kings and Queens give 2x when played): Besides Canio with heavy support, the first of the Legendaries that really feels like it deserves to be in this special tier. A cracked multiplier boost for free on the face cards with some of the better support is just aces (card joke!)
Perkeo (Create a Negative copy of a consumable you own after each shop): This card is fucked up and it should be incredibly obvious why it's fucked up.
I got Yorrick when playing the 15-Minute City Challenge, and upon winning I made the unfortunate discovery that nothing you discover during a Challenge will be added to your Collection. I guess they don't count as "Unseeded Runs."
Here's my notes on the decks I've won with so far. The highest I've gotten with any deck is Ante 11 with the deck I'd constructed during that Challenge (which I didn't take notes on, alas).

Holographic Joker Stencil
+10 Mult; X1 Mult for each empty Joker slot Joker Stencil Included

There were other Negative Jokers I couldn't afford that would have been even sicker.

A Negative Chicot is however a completely free fuck you to Boss Blinds
I've only gotten Canio twice, but once was when I hate the All Cards Count As Face Cards joker, so even something like playing a glass 4 was contributing. I think I got it up to like 12x
I'm trying to think what the most degenerate thing you could do with Perkeo is. Not sure yet, quite possibly one of the spectral cards (the dupe copies of a card one), or Emperor, so you just get a tidal wave of tarot cards

Observatory, 1.5x multiplier boost every blind you clear.

There is a picture of this earlier in the thread. It gets STUPID.
Using the Spade/Hearts deck, I got a +10 "use planet card to give +0.1 Mult" joker.
The game lovingly gave me the "All planets and planet packs are free" joker, and the "Your most played hand is always in planet packs" voucher.
By the time he was 1.9 I had gotten a copy joker, so I tossed all my other jokers away, and copied it, so I was at x3.8 mult with inherent +20 Mult at that moment. Found a Cavendish banana for more sweet x3 Mult, and the Queens give +13 Mult when held.
I voraciously fed planets, and a lot of them were flushes, so I was scoring well.
I managed to beat the 7.2M blind.
I had the "reroll boss blind" voucher and with the 10M blind I would obtain the $10 to reroll the "Very large blind" boss.
I was scoring hands of 2.5M and 3M and the 10M was in reach.
And then I stupidly played a Straight Flush instead of my extremely leveled up Flush, and I lost the 10M .
For the first time the Ante 11 boss seemed possible, and I could've unlocked the Ante 12 voucher.
One thing I think i noticed last night that I haven't yet verified is that the red seal will take effect not just when a card is played, but when a card is triggered period. So for instance a steel card will trigger twice. And by extension I think that means that foil/hologram/polychrome will also apply when steel triggers?

So I might on one hand play 4 2s with red seals, and put the joker in the position where it duplicates the retrigger card, causing all the 2s to permanently boost the other joker more times. Then on the next hand I shift it over to my biggest mult joker to hit the score required to win the blind.

I was scoring hands of 2.5M and 3M and the 10M was in reach.
