spoiler tags

It seems to me that there are degrees of spoilers. I mean, sometimes people will 'spoiler' a joke line, and sometimes i'll stumble across the secret ending to five roleplaying games in one list and wish I could hit myself and forget what I just learned.

What about the tag changing colors depending on severity? Like dark blue for simple spoilers or jokes, red for moderate spoilers, and ultra red for spoilers which will change your life so you better be damn careful before you highlight them?

Or would that be too hard to do? Or would the ultra spoilers just be used in jokes as well?

Any thoughts?

This isn't really clear. In application, I mean. It makes perfect sense when you think about it.

Perhaps we should start cracking heads for abuse of the spoiler tag, as well. That tag wasn't created for funny gags.

From what I've seen of spoiler tags, when people are posting actual spoilers they label them beforehand. It's pretty clear which ones are intended to be gags, imo.

My idea, if we want to improve, is deal with spoiler tags like quote tags.

    I.E.
would have Spoiler: Starwars in the visible portion, with the actual spoiler beneath. People could still have their fun with random shenanigans, but any abuse of Actual Spoilers like
    Matrix sucks
Could have the hammer brought down.

I already have gotten into the habit of ignoring spoiler tags because 90% of the time they are used for jokes. One time I looked at a tag, and it ruined a portion of KOTOR for me.

eh. i've never cared about spoilers anyways. but i don't think it's that big a deal. no matter what happens, people will abuse it. so making it more complex won't really help that much.

    Your idea?

Exactly the problem we need to address.

either the spoiler tags are enforced and abuse is a punishable offense, or people are going to abuse them no matter what the system is.

This is what I'm talkin' 'bout.

I see it as a social problem. You have to get people using the realspoilers for actual spoilers, and spoiler tags for jokes. We could just all spend the next month reminding everyone of the difference every time we see them do anything else, and then start the jailings.

Remove real spoilers. Make Spoilers look like Real Spoilers, since that is the expected look of things that are actual spoilers. Let everyone know we will kick ass for abuse of it.

Hey, I think I remember saying that [ spoiler] tags would become the next (old) size 0 font.

Then I got told that it would die down in a week or two and would only be used for spoilers.

    Just saying.

The best spoiler tags I've seen are the ones on movie forums where they use drop down boxes. They visibly take up less space until you click the suckers and then reveal the spoiled contents.

I'm sure that's a pain to code compared to what we have now, though.

    Edit: here's an example.

I don't like this idea, if I'm in the middle of a game, for instance, doom 3, and I see a spoiler which may not be a spoiler for me, I highlight the first few words, eg:

I might start to highlight a spoiler and see the first few words as 'As you enter Hell did anyone...' and stop right there, because I don't want to read the rest, whereas if it started off 'As you enter the Alpha labs, did anyone...' I would read the rest, because I'm past that.

However, with the drop down boxes, I can't chose to to that, as soon as I start to test the water a little, bang, I get the entire thing.

I think it's a pretty fucking sorry state of affairs where we have to have the real spoilers labeled as such. Wouldn't it make more sense to have regular spolier tags as the real ones and then joke spoiler tags which are labeled as such?

Or in fact, just stop getting so worked up about it. If you think the spoiler tag may contain an actual spolier which you wouldn't want to read, just don't read it - if you go reading spoilers expecting jokes and end up reading a real spoiler, get over it. The beauty of this system would be that many people would just stop reading spoiler tags in movie and game threads unless they had already seen or played the game thus lessening the audience for crap jokes like [spoiler:0acd6dfbaf]HERMIONE DIES OMGIMSOFUNNYANDORIGINAL![/spoiler:0acd6dfbaf] which could only be a good thing.
