Busted my knee

Heyo,

I got hurt decent badly for the first time in a while last night. Was out longboarding, had to ditch while rolling along at a decent speed, landed mostly on my right knee. I can walk on it and it's got pretty much normal mobility, but it hurts like a sum-bitch. I iced it up last night and I'm doing the aspirin thing. What else can I do to accelerate it's recovery? If it's not good in X amount of days, should I take it to the doc just to be sure?

Only reason I'm worried is because my buddy tore up his ACL a few months ago and he really hasn't been able to do as much as he used to.

If you have the insurance to cover it, get it checked out.

While I agree with the not fucking with joints part, I think you're ok to wait for now.

When you go to the doctor they're (edit: probably) not going to be able to do anything until swelling reduces anyway. The medical acronym we always use for mild sprains and contusions is R.I.C.E: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Some study somewhere along the line decided that this is the best way to handle it. I'd say if just in a couple of days of following this, or if it in anyway worsens, then head to the doc.

So I went to the doc after work today, and he said it should be ok, but because my busted leg calf is about an inch bigger then my uninjured one, he wants me to come in tomorrow morning for some x-rays.

He mentioned blood clots. Ahhh, fuck.

I'll let you know if anything comes up. Thanks for the help!

Don't tweak too much about the clot thing. It's a routine worry. Anytime someone hurts their leg, especially the calf, there's a possibility for veins to get damaged. And the slight risk, is slightly worsened by the tendency to remain seated because of the injury. Unless you've multiple additional risk factors, the chances are indeed very slim.

edit: I thought it was your knee?

When I subluxed my knee cap I got a case of the elephant foot (thats what my swollen ass ankle made my foot look like) It went away after a few days.

No biggie, just keep it RICED.

Here's the scoop. X-rays at my clinic found something funky, so I went in to the local major hospital to get them checked out further. Turns out the pain is mostly from tendon damage, but I actually have a bone tumor hanging out behind my knee, and I wouldn't have found it if I didn't take the spill off the board. Freaky stuff.

I'm making an appointment for next week with an ortho specialist. I really hope this won't require immediate surgery, because school is in less than a month and my campus is not exactly wheelchair friendly.

It's not that they don't have ramps and elevators and the like, it's just really fackin' hilly...which ironically is why I bought a longboard.

If anything, I'd imagine you chipped your kneecap. Is there a specific spot that is more swelled up than any other spot?

EDIT: Sorry, pretty late on the response. Sorry to here about the news, but it's good you caught it.

If you get your knee fixed in the next couple weeks by the time you get to college you really probably shouldnt be in a wheelchair anymore. A week is the longest that you should need the wheelchair.

Thanks for all the kind words everybody. I haven't been really freaking out or anything, but I really wish the doc would've used a word other than 'tumor' because I automatically associated that with " 'sup cancer?"

jammer, I live on the island but I go to SUNY Geneseo.

You know, you're allowed to ask, what kind of tumor? Cancerous?

That said, best of luck and wishing you a speedy recovery.

Just got out of the specialist's office. It's a totally benign thing, and I'm getting it removed when I'm home again for winter break. The pain I've got right now is from some tendon damage and a little bit of bleeding around the tumor, so I'm off the athletic-type activities for the rest of the summer at least.

Thanks again for the support guys, means a bunch.
