Experience denotation for languages on resume?

What's the preferred way to denote level of proficiency with programming languages on a resume? My initial thought was to use years, but that doesn't say much and it's very nebulous. Someone suggested Inexperienced>Intermediate>Experienced>Proficient>Expert, but that seems confusing - is experienced better or worse than intermediate?

    Seems like you got it right in your order.

    I use proficient a lot, and always consider it one down from expert/fluent (in a language sense more than anything_

    I would think your proficiency would be evident from your experience. Your jobs and projects should show which programming language you used.
