I just use abs as something to do besides cardio on my off days. And I'm very guilty of never remembering to keep my core super tight during lifts. Gotta work on that.

Just got back from the gym. I have a manta ray now, tried it out. It seemed nice for putting the weight in the right spot. I think it greatly improved my form. Much easier to keep my back in what seems like near-perfect form. (I'm no expert though)

However, it seems to be designed for people smaller than myself, those two curved doodads which go beside the neck seem to dig into my shoulders a bit. I also wasn't expecting the plastic to be quite as hard as it is, but I guess it needs to be tough. I have some marks from it's front edges, like tiny bruises drawn with a pen. Maybe I'll put a thin dense pad of some kind under the manta ray to help with those marks.

I switched back to the pad for the third of four sets, and while it's more comfortable, it just feels retarded after using the manta ray. Went back to the manta ray for the last set.

I occasionally do abs. I like doing med ball sit-ups with the ball above the head (like a skullcrusher) and then you throw it against the wall at the top of the rep. Also weighted decline situps, I can do 25 with a 35lb weight. I think my abs are getting overdeveloped, though, they're larger than I would like and make my stomach bulge even more than my fat does.

I went and googled Thruster; that looks like just a deep push press.

My only concern would be to be careful about form breakdown if you're doing a lot in quick succession. Seems like sloppy form there could lead to injury and/or bad form in OHP and front squats.

Yeah, they're squats + push press, with the goal to get it as one smooth motion.

I was going slowly, trying to get the form right. I'm not familiar with the movement at all, I kept breaking the squat and the press apart with a pause. Plus, I wasn't doing a lot of weight, because I knew I'd need to focus on form. Didn't matter, still knocked the wind out of me.

Made everything else I did (deadlifts, pullups) twice as hard as it normally is. So good.

Plyometrics are my favorite way to work abs, and also my dad's favorite. One time when we went to the gym together, he grabbed the largest medicine ball (I think it was 15 or 20lb) and we sat about 5 feet apart. Lay in sit up position, ball overhead, and then do a situp with an overhead throw to the other person.

My dad is almost 60, and it took all of my strength to keep my arms from being ripped off when I caught it, and it killed my abs trying to keep my shoulders from flying through the floor.
But I got my revenge in the weight room because he has bad knees.

Word of warning for the Thruster. Make sure that you keep your elbows up on the front squat portion of the or you can screw up and sandwich your forearm between the bar and your leg. What will follow is a broken wrist and a serious crimp in your day.

They can be a good part of the work out, but they are a lot easier to screw up than people realize.

    Good luck!

Best ab workout I ever got was doing a tree-ropes course.

Balancing on a swinging log 50 feet above the ground forces you to engage your core SO MUCH.

Thrusters are really terrible. They are a massive injury risk to the wrists and elbows. You see, it is a combination of a press and a front squat. You grip the bar differently when you front squat and when you press. When you front squat, the bar is resting far from the wrist, out on the fingers. When you press, the bar is as close to the wrist as possible in the palm. So now you are trying to front squat and press, how do you grip the bar? If you grip it in the palm, your elbows drop down in the front squat, stressing them and increasing the likelihood of your upper back rounding forward and an inefficient squat. If you grip it in the fingers, you are going to be holding the bar in your hand too far from the wrist which will be super likely to lead to a wrist injury. There is a chance you can quickly switch right at the perfect moment, but when you are doing 30 reps, you get tired and your chances of actually doing this are really low. Surf the Crossfit forum and see how many people in the injury forum are talking about thruster injuries. You want to get your wind knocked out of you by an exercise, there's a million ways to do it without putting yourself as badly at risk as with thrusters. Really a garbage movement.

Duly noted; thanks for the insight. I will tell my workout partner and insist we lay off the garbage movements.

Squats are just as challenging for me, anyway, and I can do more weight on them.

Not much, it's just training one part of the lift with a smaller ROM. Somebody more knowledgeable can probably do a better job of explaining.

I mainly do hang cleans because as I mentioned in the last thread my gym recently bought weights that have a tiny diameter which means leaning down further which means potentially breaking form on a lift you don't want to break form on.

Same reason I'm doing rack pulls instead of deads right now :/

woo my squat is going up

I've been eating a shitton more than normal, and getting some decent rest

used to I couldn't even finish 5 reps @235lbs, now I'm up to 250lbs 3x5. I'm gonna keep pushing these gains as far as I can, maybe a 1RM attempt is in order.

also, because of my tweaked shoulder, the physical therapist wants me doing light weight that I can do between 10-12 reps of. so I've switched to DB bench and shoulder presses. I figure, since I'm already doing light weight/high rep stuff, can I just switch upper body routine so that it's a more hypertrophy oriented scheme? maybe throw in some arnold presses/incline DB presses, something to get more upper body work going now that I'm not doing heavy barbell stuff.

I'm doing MWF, so something like:

workout A: DB Bench press 3x10 (maybe 4x10?), Inclide DB press 3x10
workout B: DB shoulder press 3x10, arnold press 3x10

    where I alternate A and B

all while sticking to 3x5 for my squats/deadlifts/front squats, since I'm still experiencing linear gains there. should I do more accessory upper body work? are DB shoulder presses and arnold presses in the same workout redundant? it's been so long since I did anything but barbell bench, press, and rows

Hey guys, i've currently got a knee injury(cruciate ligament) so I haven't been able to run for a couple months.

Could you suggest me any exercises that put minimal stress on the knees, they seem to be few and far between. The only thing i've been able to do so far is sit ups and upper body work in the gym. I'm going to see a specialist about it in a month but frankly, I hate getting chubby.

    Anterior or Posterior?

I tore my anterior playing tennis when I was quite a bit younger. Best I could suggest is swimming or rowing, despite being lots of leg movement, they aren't as stressful on the knee.

I'm seeing a specialist in a couple weeks and my GP didn't tell me whether it was anterior or posterior. As far as I know it's not serious, there isn't any pain unless I have high pressure on my knee. But sprinting/pivoting is out(goodbye all my team sports!) as is heavy lifting. I just really want to avoid putting any extra strain on my knee for fear of worsening it.
