I already said this in the Game Industry thread, but Australian retailers (EB and Game) have pre-orders set at Aus$348 and Aus$388 respectively. While we're not yet certain if those are still placeholder prices that haven't yet been updated or not, one thing's for certain: we're going to get reamed.

Game is struggling at the moment, I wonder if that $388 is going to be some forced bundle bullshit. EB are the recommended retail price specialists, so I'd go with $350 being the RRP. That said, given that the US price converts to ~$251.50 before tax, and therefore ~$276.50 after GST, we're paying an additional ~$75 (a markup of ~27%). It has been worse for us, but it still sucks.

Also, compared to the Japanese price (25000 yen), the markup is 14%, assuming the japanese price includes tax.

edit: Europe are no doubt having a much higher % markup than Australia is.

I think I could stomach around $300 with no game, but $350 is just out of reach without a pack-in. That said, I'm still glad not to be in Europe, but I think they might have a wider variety of choices of retailers to go to. That that said, we haven't seen our Department stores come out with a price just yet, so...

I reckon we'll be able to get it for ~$320 from JB, if $350 is really the RRP

    Maybe.

They are really playing it safe with the launch colours. Remember when you could only buy a Gamecube in purple? And look at these awesome gadgets:

Or hell, a Green and Gold 3DS. Oh man, when Nintendo Australia actively did things that were kind of Australian. I still have my Aussie GBC somewhere.

Ahh, I had that purple transparent one. Good times :)

Anywho, that Street Pass thing sounds pretty neat, I always liked the idea that you could be sitting somewhere and start playing a game with a random person just because they happened to be close, and this seems to take it to the next level.

On another topic, are the AR cards individualized? It looked like they were all the same, just the orange "?" box, I didn't see any kind of identifying marks like a bar code or something.

Put in my Amazon.co.uk order yesterday during the conference when I saw that pre-orders had gone up. I assume this happened during the conference? I hope this means I good place in the queue.

Though how is Amazon with that? I think I remember hearing that when you placed your order can mean nothing with Amazon and they send them out at random rather than in any kind of logical queue.

I don't think I actually want any of the listed launch day games. Pilot Wings maybe? Still there's plenty coming up I know I'll want so given the expected difficulty of getting ones hands on a system when released I'm happy to buy one at launch and amuse myself with the built in software until Zelda/Mario/Animal Crossing come along.

Yeah, I think most of my time in the first week or so will be spent making Miis from people's pictures and turning my desk into an AR dinosaur reserve.

Plus, assuming the store is up and running, I have all of the DSi stuff I've been missing out on, plus my DS games. I still need to finish Yoshi's Island and Apollo Justice, and Ghost Trick is just begging to be picked up.

It does indeed look like shortages will once again be an issue for awhile after launch.

Not entirely unexpected, but it alreadly looks to be a guaranteed thing.

    Japan Lines Up For 3DS . . . To Pre-Order It
It has begun! Japan has begun forming up lines for the 3DS, and over a month early, too. Have our fellow gamers in the East finally gone nuts?

The 3DS is still over a month away, but the hordes of hardcore Japanese gamers have already tied their laces and prepped their legs for another aching season of waiting in line. But are Japanese Nintendo fans so hyped for the 3DS that they’re willing to wait in front of stores for several weeks before launch?

Actually, it turns out they’re lining up to pre-order the handheld; Today, Nintendo had officially given the thumbs up for stores across Japan to start taking in pre-orders for the highly demanded handheld. Lines had formed as early as 7:00am in Japan time, with an estimate of over 200 people in front of one shop alone (the Akihabara Yodobashi Camera store, to be exact).

But why so much hoopla on the first day of pre-orders? The reason is that there’s a good chance the handheld will be under-shipped, as recent reports from retailers suggest no more than 400,000 3DS units will be available on February 26th, Japan’s official launch date. Even though Nintendo claims to have 1.5 million units shipped domestically by the end of the fiscal year (March 31st), past experiences have proven that even the Big N tends to underestimate how quickly their products sell.

    From Iwata Laughs:
Miyamoto: But Iwata-san also wants to include 3D video in the future! (laughs)

Iwata: I think it will be fun if we're able to include video recording capabilities with future updates.

Itoi: I have no idea, but when you take 3D photos and videos, is there some kind of capacity limit?

Iwata: An SD card goes in this slot.

Itoi: Oh, an SD card! Like two gigabytes?

Iwata: It comes with a 2-gigabyte card, but you can, for example, use a 32-gigabyte one as well.

Itoi: Oh, okay, I see. So you seriously can take as many as you want.

Iwata: Yes. Long videos, lots of photos, they'll fit.

Thing is, the more colors you have available at launch the less colors you can introduce later to whip people into a frenzy because "whoa, green 3DS!" and then reap in even more sales. Then you have colors with revisions sometimes too after said revision has already been out for awhile.

Nintendo knows that some of their loyalists will buy anything and they take advantage of that when they can. What is even more awesome for them is that people thank them for it too. Thats the cynical viewpoint of course though, sometimes things do really need fixing. The "you can't see what you're playing" factor with the GBA and the fuck ugly exterior and form factor of the first DS are prime examples. And hell, I owned every version of the original DS except the DSi at one point or another.

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, because sometimes people just plain can't afford things for one reason or another, and I respect that. People gotta eat and pay bills. But I agree with what somebody else said about this - if you really want a 3DS, but $250 is just $50 too much and you're planning on waiting a year or more, you should honestly think about that decision. $50 is not a lot. About 5 hours of work at most jobs, the price of a single game in exchange for not owning a console for an entire year. This isn't a 599 US dollars situation where you should have to get a second job, we're talking about buying five less pizzas.

I guess a lot of people will probably crack anyway though, once it's in the wild. Particularly the ranting GAFers.

Obviously if you are not from the US or Japan then it appears you are getting reamed and I feel sorry for you and you should probably put serious thought into importing.

€250 isn't that bad when you consider there's close to a 20% tax in a lot of countries. Plus, wage differences and such.

Not that I've decided to get one at launch. The only thing I'd do is fiddle with the 3D. I didn't get a DS at launch since no games really impressed me. Give it a year and the quality games should arrive to persuade me. And hopefully a revision.

Kotaku on Kid Icarus for lefties:
In the course of the six minutes here, you'll also see me, a lefty, grapple with seemed to be controls created for right-handed gamers. I had no choice but to use the stylus in my right hand, since I had to use my left thumb on the 3DS' analog-stick-style circle pad. The discomfort was fading just a few minutes in. It was odd, but I can get used to it.

I wondered if that might be the case. After all, I do use the mouse in my right hand with no trouble. Here's hoping the game won't be that much of a problem.

Yeah, nothing wrong with waiting for a revision if that's your thing. Personally I keep in mind that there will be at least two revisions, so I get the original system and skip that first remodel.

Also, I was thinking about the XL, and how some people want an XL version of the 3DS...I'm not sure that it would work well. Wouldn't you have to be relatively further away from the screen for the 3D effect to work? I hope this doesn't hold Nintendo back from making one.

We may have the base UK price:
I got talking to a representative from one of the major supermarket brands in the UK, who told me that Nintendo is selling 3DS units to him at a base price of £173.

Which is an equivalent of $276. That is (possibly) the minimum price, with retailers making no profit at all.

I recently damaged my DSlite top screen and was looking to replace it with a 3DS, but with a £220 price tag and region locking that is completely out of the question. I could get a 360 with Kinect for that kind of money!

I'd import but seeing as I got slapped with a £15 customs charge for Etrian Odyssey III on top of game and shipping costs, it'd probably end up being more expensive after just a couple of games.

E: £170 base price is pretty crazy, that's more than the XL retails for. Guess that means no price drops for a long, long time.

I checked with the Gamestation I preordered with today, and they don't have much more information. Their guesstimate of the price was around £230. If major supermarket chains decide to price them lower, however, it could all change.

They have around 10 pre-orders so far, which is enough to make me nervous - especially as they won't be having a midnight lauch for those numbers, so I'd have to take the day off work to ensure I'd be first in the queue.

    Which might be a plan...

Tax returns. Seeing demos of games, videos in person, and the game ons and everything word of mouth related that can be expected here or course too, but I swear Nintendo launches handhelds in the spring because they know that a sudden influx of income for people will cause them to buy the cool new shiny toy that they desire.

Of course there are also things like the release of a new Mario Kart to consider. Anyway, I agree with everything you said in that post. While it would obviously be cool if the 3DS was cheaper (or hey, Nintendo should give them all away because they love their customers so much!), its price is really more then fair. This isn't a situation like when the PS3 or iPhone first came out. To me its more like "$250? Oh, okay then." And I guess that while I am excited for it, I don't feel like I absolutely have to buy it at launch too. If circumstances require that I have to wait a few months (which they might) its not the end of the world or anything.

Keep going back and forth on this (the fact I'm getting about 1,800 in income tax return doesn't help). Outside of SFIV I'm meh about every launch game but the tech and price are really attractive.

Then I remind myself that I hardly ever play portable games and traded in my DS and my PSP Go is just gathering dust. Though I'm going to Comic Con this year and this would be nice to have.

At this point I've come to terms with the price, as I know I can budget £100 from each paycheck between now and the release (I'll just eat rice and beans for a few more meals rather than buying a sandwich), so any lower than the worst case scenario will be a bonus :)

The Gamestation staff seemed pretty confident that they'd have enough units to cover demand, though, as it isn't a prime location - they apparently had Wiis for a week or so after launch.

    Good news everyone!

    Nintendo talks about battery life:

"Actually, if you have the 3D, Wi-Fi and other functions off it's longer than five hours," said Yarnton talking to Eurogamer.
I'm guessing the various times will be similar to DSi. Hopefully this can put all the battery complaints to rest.
