I remember really liking Enemy Territory quite a bit but I realize now that I don't enjoy tight corridor multiplayer shooters much. This game is pretty much all corridors right? The SMART system looks like it could be really fun though and may help my pain with close quarters.

Finally caught the "Basics" video yesterday and man, the game just reeks of polish. It also seems like they're really going the extra mile to pull in new FPSers, or those burned by competitive FPSes in the past.

I was able to talk most of my buddies into preordering with the D2D sale last weekend, and besides the good reception here I've seen similar responses on Shacknews and RPS forums. I'm not sure if the game will be a huge hit with the "general public", but the hype is building amongst the type of players I actually want to play with.

This. I can appreciate the skill it takes to snipe in most games in order to be effective and consistent, but it's always just felt so damn cheap to me. I'm very much the "wait til you see the white's of their eyes" type player. And while this doesn't exactly get me the best Kill/Death ratio, I personally find it funner than sitting in one spot watching a long, empty corridor for 5 minutes hoping someone walks by.

    Different strokes though...

I like large open areas just because I think it adds to not having pre defined paths to always take. I hate running through hallways and alleyways just to turn the corner into a gun barrel or have no where to escape if I need to. An open area can give us a few options in battle movement. If SMART adds new options to corridor levels then I might enjoy it.

    Oh and fuck snipers.

ADS always improves aiming, but the weapon type will define how much it helps. Rifles are pretty mediocre spray cannons running around, but ADS will tighten it up well for slow movement shooting. SMGs have almost no benefits through ADS but have better spread during movement and are a choice weapon for running and gunning in a variety of stances (including jumping and climbing)

Aiming down the sight changes the sound of the gun too, to reflect it being nearer your ears.

Also, you can hear gunfire and background noise from other player's location when using chat. It's only quiet, so it is not disturbing, but it adds to the atmosphere.

Tridus-- I am not sure about the shotguns' range. I hope it is better than Black Ops, and I did see a video several weeks that had some longer range shotgun action, but I cannot remember which vid it was in.

t Lewie-- yeah, the sound design for this sounds pretty neat, conceptually. I'm reserving judgement on it until I actually play it, of course, but it sounds like they are doing some really neat things with sound in this game.

So, how does the multiplayer work exactly? I know there are a number of objectives across the various maps and you sort of choose which one you'd like to go for. Is the team that completes its objectives first the winner? Are the objectives linear? Like control points in TF2.

The way it looks is that there are a specific set of main, linear objectives; escort the VIP, blow up the door, etc. In addition, there are various side objectives that, while they don't contribute directly to the progress of the mission, aid your team. Things like capturing command posts, building machine guns, or destroying blockades. I would guess that the attacking team has more direct objectives, while the defenders are tasked with keeping them from completing them until time runs out.

I wonder how creating your characters will work, in regards to character slots and teams. Will a security and a rebel have to take up their own character slots (you have ten), or will you simply create two skins for one character?

Pretty sure you set the faction when creating a new character. You can then customize the look and guns of the character at any time. You may also customize the skills, though resetting the skills costs one level. Since the skills are limited per character, not per class, you'll either have to reset or switch characters if you want to specialize in another class.
In-game, you choose your body type and class.

I would have agreed with you before the whole release of personal information news dropped. PSN being down for a week? Inconvenient, annoying at worst. Sony compromising the personal information and possibly credit cards for 70 million of its customers? That's going to be a thorn in their side for QUITE a while.

And somehow I doubt many companies are going to follow in Valve's footsteps, even if they were to offer free cross platform copies. A few might, but the lure of the double dip is strong (especially given Steam's frequent sales). On the other, if it convinces more gamers to buy the full-priced game (rather than waiting for a steam sale or renting it), there might be a future for that idea.

Things like capturing command posts, building machine guns, or destroying blockades. I would guess that the attacking team has more direct objectives, while the defenders are tasked with keeping them from completing them until time runs out.

This is basically the way it works

As an example, look at that gameplay video where they show the robot being escorted through the streets. The attackers need to blow open a gate, escort the robot through, secure some information, and escape, or something like that. Each one of those is one objective phase that can sort of go back and forth.

To blow open the gate, a Soldier has to toss their bomb on it, then the attackers need to defend the gate for 40 seconds until it explodes or a defending Engineer can freeze and disable the bomb. Likewise the attackers need to escort and defend the robot while it moves through the streets, if they fail and it's damaged too much and disabled, then the defenders need to defend it so that the attackers can't get an Engineer in to fix it and keep it moving, etc

And then yeah, side objectives just provide other benefits. Like capturing command posts can give your entire team a passive bonus, and can also provide a forward spawn point and a place nearby to change classes quickly to respond to changing mission objectives. (If they disable your robot, and you have no Engineer, it's of great advantage to be able to run to a command point near mid-map to change your class, instead of heading all the way back to your original spawn)

Since the skills are limited per character, not per class, you'll either have to reset or switch characters if you want to specialize in another class.
In-game, you choose your body type and class.

    A few clarifications/corrections:

A "character" has both a Security and Resistance variation. Many (most?) of the clothing options are faction specific, so you'll likely unlock clothing items for both factions as you level up. Guns, attachments and perks unlocked for that character can be used when playing either faction, though gun and attachment paint jobs might also be faction specific.

Resetting skills does cost one level, and it's a full wipe, so you can completely change your character's perk loadout. It's unknown exactly how perks will interact with different classes, as every ability each class can perform is technically a perk (like disguising as an Operative or healing as a Medic).

You can only change your weapon and class in-game. Changing your perks or your body type, as well as changing your character's clothing or gun attachments can only be accomplished outside of the game in the customization menu (either in between games or from the main menu).

    Short Answer: 4

    Long Answer: Wiki source
    Top Attachments
Top attachments improve or replace the weapon's sights, effectively improving aiming when using the sights. Guns larger than sidearms are capable of utilizing adjusted iron sights, red dot sights, and scopes.
Despite their purpose, top attachments have no effect on range or accuracy at longer ranges. In fact, top attachments do not have any statistic benefits at all, and only lower equip speed when installed.

    Front Attachments
Front attachments are installed onto the barrel of a gun. These upgrades mainly deal with affecting sound, damage- and recoil-related statistics.

    Bottom Attachments
The bottom attachment is placed under the grip of the gun. These attachments can be considered miscellaneous because their benefits range from improving weapon draw speeds to allowing for an underbarrel grenade launcher system.

    Magazine Attachments
Magazine attachments affect magazine capacity and reloading speed. These range from massive magazines with a formidable count of ammo to duct-tape magazines that allow for very quick reloading.

There are various attachment "slots" for each gun.

Barrel, grip, clip, and I think stock off the top of my head.

I recall, at the very least, putting a foregrip, silencer, and drum magazine on my SMG.

There's no limit that I recall to the number of attachments, so you should always be able to put something in an attachment slot if you want to and have an available attachment, they just balance it by always having the stats on attachments be a tradeoff to some degree.

EDIT: Ah, alright, I knew their were four, it was just sights instead of the stock.
