The Golden Throne is the name of an astronishingly complex life-support device that has house the Emperor of Mankind for over ten thousand years. Once the mighty ruler of mankind, the Emperor was mortally wounded and was interred in the device, where he stills maintains the ability for humans to travel across space; though ten thousand or so must be sacrificed for him to be able to do so. The Emperor is in no shape the rule the Imperium of Man, a galaxy-spanning empire best described as a dictatorial theocracy marked by extensive stagnation and decay. Most humans worship the Emperor as a god.
However, vastly powerful entities know as the Chaos Gods exist in the Warp, a reality that exists concurrent to realspace where emotion and nightmare are given form. These entities are strengthened by mortal emotion and desire, and each of the four are tied to specific emotions and concepts.

Khorne- god of blood, war and slaughter
Slaanesh- god of pleasure, excess and desire
Tzeentch- Fate, change and hope
