I actually really admire the technical aspects of it
Hell yeah boxing is great, even if it's just a pure cardio workout than sparrig against someone else. Be prepared to feel like your body has committed suicide in a thousand different ways the next morning though.
I don't think I've been in an actual fight since primary school.
The fact I'm 6'4" and reasonably well built tends to hide the fact that I'm a complete pussy to a fair degree. And I don't tend to get in a lot of confrontational situations due to me being a complete pussy, I'll always do everything I can to avoid physical confrontation.
you think maybe the fact that you're 6'4 and built might have something to do with you, y'know
not having confrontational situations thrust ON you?

I've been doing it for a while (although I've had to slack recently due to changing where I work). It's a fantastic workout, you'll get great cardio and muscle strength out of it.
I found I really couldn't cut it on the competitive side, where there's a local league and a prize pool and people are going for KOs. I did a few fights (won 2, lost 5), but since it's the competitive rules they allow shots to the head. I suffered three concussions which didn't affect me too badly in the ring, but I was feeling the effects for several weeks afterwards at my day job. Since I don't really have any dreams of making my living as a prizefighter, giving up on the competitive bouts wasn't a big deal.
The intraleague fights are less serious, no headshots allowed - this means they're a little more geared towards physical endurance than technique, but you'll still pick up a lot along the way, particularly if you're going in for proper coaching.

My whole situation with art is depressing to me. It's been so long since I've enjoyed it, and depression makes sure I don't enjoy most things. I'm too busy comparing myself to everyone, and not just where my art is concerned. I haven't sat down and drawn something and had fun with it in years, I just don't know if it's gonna happen for me anymore. I try not to think about it. I carry around a pen and an empty sketchbook in my purse all the time and I don't even know why, I've never opened it.

Well yeah, maybe, but there's also the thing Rolo said about people looking for trouble when you're noticeably bigger than them.
I wouldn't say I'm built. I just have quite a big frame, broad shoulders etc but my biceps are like a pea on a piece of string.
Boxing is something I'm also interested in, I suspect the fact I have stupidly long arms might come in handy. I might be too old to start looking into it though (I'm 32)
Guys, stop talking about punching, I have a dating problem
I'm apparently too good at it because what was meant to be a short term thing has turned into something pretty awesome (we have only spent one night apart since before Xmas)
But she's leaving the country in a month
We're going on a trip to Vegas just before she leaves though so that's going to be pretty fucking great

That sucks. I was in a similar situation a couple of years ago, met a girl (via facebook of all places) in November and she made it very clear from the start that she was leaving the country in February. No matter how much you try and remain detached and see it as just a short term thing it's really hard to not get emotionally involved (or it is for me anyway).
The best advice I can give is to not dwell on the fact she's leaving, just try and enjoy the time you have and make sure you make some good memories. No regrets.
(also, sorry for clogging up the dating thread with my almost constant posts, I am incredibly bored at work)

well
you're probably too old to do it and make a living off fighting competitively
but the gym I was at had guys that would train and spar who started in their 40s, the oldest member was in his 60s

how far is she going?
London, though she'll also be living in Edinburgh and a few other places over the course of a year or so.
Deicist: Yeah, we're both definitely focusing on just having a good time and making the most of it while she's here (hence Vegas and barely leaving each other's side for 3 weeks, hah)
This may just happen! It will obviously depend heavily on circumstances that haven't been fully planned out yet (and man, I'm going to spend a lot on plane tickets this year), but there's definitely a strong possibility that I will end up in the UK sometime this year

I've been in Vancouver for the past two years (and hopefully the next 2 as well, fingers crossed)
