...But that would be pretty fun to try cooking. I think I've got some rice flour floating around somewhere...
A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.
I still have no idea what the appeal of Ren and Stimpy was.

I'm actually quite a bit of a 90's cartoon buff.
Ren and Stimpy was one of the original Nicktoons, the other two being Rugrats and Doug which aired August 11, 1991. It was incredibly different than anything else that had been seen in animation on air at that time. It had twisted characters, adult themes and had quite a few stylistic hallmarks. It embraced having violent or mean characters, condoned violence, and actually, had some very impressive monologues.
Stylistically, John K had a few notes he liked to repeat. The first was the gruesome close up. Sponge Bob does this from time to time as an homage. Something will happen and then a close up freeze frame of something rather cringe worthy or foul is presented for a few seconds. The next thing was the broken, blotted backgrounds. When Ren would snap and laugh like a maniac, the background would alternate to bright yellow with ink blots, then fiery red with beads all around- like there was no real reason in that bubble of his.
Ren and Stimpy did pave the way for much more off-color shows, South Park, Duckman and Beavis and Butthead all had rough, crude themes, but it was John K pushing Nickelodeon's buttons with dog on cat violence. He would negotiate by saying he'd have a heartwarming episode followed by a cruel one, but an unaired episode where in Ren beats cameo character, George Liquor, with an oar in a pretty gratuitous and prolonged manner finally meant John K had to go.
TL;DR, Ren and Stimpy was a show that when I was a kid, I knew was cartoon junk food. It was the equivalent to a box of hostess cakes covered in maple syrup with ice cream and sprinkles on top. At room temperature. I knew it wasn't any good for me, or even really all that delicious, but I loved it for what mindless fun it was.
Here's a few select clips that will make you cringe or your money back! Mind you again, this shit was on television. I specifically remember seeing the second clip in front of my parents and they just looked dumbfounded...
You gotta understand, John K is a loser. He always was. He could never stick to production deadlines for either Nickelodeon nor Spike. He would get antsy and testy about what he felt was necessary to put in, only later to cave in on other things. Worst of all, even when he was given full creative control at Spike, it still wasn't a likable or charming result. He just set out to out do himself. He's been out of work for a while. He does do commercials here and there and small projects, but I bet is hardly making much money anymore.
These days he runs a blog and shits on other people's work on a regular basis. He just couldn't consistently deliver a product of consistent quality.
Lucky you're being a bit harsh on John K. He's still a fantastic animator despite his faults and opinions.
Well, considering he went to Nickelodeon with 3 concepts and the director only liked the dog and cat in one of the concepts, that kinda speaks quite a bit, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, he created a staple 90's cartoon that goes down in history and I agree with his thesis that shows used to have toys. Now toys have cartoons, but you gotta admit, the guy has faced failure dozens of times and never did anything to break out of it.
One of my favorite doomed shows was Mission Hill, and as trendy and as hip as it was, it was still on WB and still wasn't as nearly as popular as it could have been, but it was by Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstien who later went on to fry bigger fish.
EDIT: I would like to apologize in advance if this is too much discussion for a youtube thread. o.o;

John is only at his best when there's someone there to rein him in.
When there's no one there... The Adult Party is what you get..
I probably should sit down and make a Youtube series about different 90's cartoons and anime. I hate to admit it, but I know stupid amounts of info and know secret easter eggs for shows like Ren & Stimpy, Doug, Rocko's Modern Life, Ahh! Real Monsters, Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, 2 Stupid Dogs, Courage, Mission Hill (Early 2000's, I know, shut up), Duckman and plenty others. What do you guys say?
Apparently the guys who made Guilty Gear... Also did the Sega Master System port for Double Dragon.. The fuck? I had no clue they went that far back o_O

while one of john k's biggest pet peeves about modern animation is the use of concave lines in character design and animation in general
and p&s was basically composed entirely of concave lines
yeah I know it's sort of a complicated roundabout thing but it makes me smile anyway
No sir. I assure you, you are incorrect.
I want to like John K's work, because he's clearly talented, but man.
That art style turns me off so much.
As does Ren & Stimpy's content.
John K. helped paved the way for a lot of the crazy animation I love, but he's not that good of a person.
