Lost Odyssey did over 500k in the US with a massive ad campaign. Xenoblade back in 2008-9 might have been able to under similar circumstances (I doubt Nintendo would go all out like that, but maybe.)
Xenoblade is also both hurt and helped by the reputation of Xenosaga. XS1 was the surprise JRPG breakout sales hit of last gen in the US and is the single reason why they made two more of those games after a semi lackluster Japanese launch. XS2 and 3 however did not shall we say meet sales goals.
Which is too bad because Xenosaga 3, at least (IMO obviously) was an excellent JRPG. Though after 2, I wouldn't hold it against someone for giving up on the series. I actually didn't mind it like many, but I can see why it was pretty despised. It certainly didn't help sales of 3.
Don't forget part of the reason for the dearth of "deep" third-party Wii games is that Nintendo didn't reveal the Wii's motion control until the E3 before it released. Third parties completely ignored it until then, went ape after the reveal -- and had no time to develop anything besides minigame fests and such for the launch window. By the time most of them did have time to do something deeper the system was already pidgeonholed as the casualware machine.
This is why we're hearing about Wii U stuff so early.
You think third parties didn't know about the controller prior to that E3? No rumors among themselves? I figured most third parties investigated every upcoming platform.
Who would we expect to have come up with some awesome stuff if they'd known about it sooner?

Eh, the Xeno- name still has a lot of good will built up from Xenogears, regardless of how well or poorly Xenosaga did. I think Xenoblade being called what it is would have been a benefit to sales.
Speaking of which, when is the NPD report for last month scheduled to show up? Although it's a long shot, it'd be neat if Xenoblade managed to make the top 10 (or at least the top 10 individual SKUs).

They do. But Nintendo, for whatever reason (probably wanting to keep things under wraps so their competition didn't ape them -- didn't stop Sony from shoehorning motion controls into the PS3 at the last minute), didn't reveal things to, well, anyone until shortly before E3. When the Wii itself was vaguely revealed a year before, it was just this underpowered... thing, and it was met with an earth-shattering "meh."
Capcom came out with Zack and Wiki, Konami whipped up something interesting in Elebits, and Ubisoft tried Red Steel, even though it sucked. Who knows, maybe those three could have come up with something more elaborate if they had more time.
Nintendo didn't do a very good job courting developers.
They're certainly not having any problems on the handheld front.
They still don't have anything major from the west.
Not sure how that's relevant. Besides, the DS didn't much in the way of western developer support either.
It means they haven't done a very good job of courting western developers. :P
Although I struggle to think of any great efforts from any western developers ever for any handheld. God of War PSP, I guess? Otherwise you get Madden and CoD and GBA-slot Guitar Hero downports.
If you're in the market for a new car between May 1 and July 31 of this year, Toyota is trying to entice you with a free PlayStation Vita. Anyone who purchases the Scion iQ, which starts at $15,995, will get Sony's sleek handheld at no extra charge. And hey, no Skyping behind the wheel!

Yeah, I don't foresee Max Payne 3 doing all that well.
Pachter thinks Max and Diablo will turn the tide on poor sales this year.
What do you have to say about that? Hmmm?
Edit to Clarify: I think Pachter is still hurting from doubting RDR and believes anything with R* on it will sell huge. As for Diablo 3; old game finally gets another sequel. I know its huge with a certain crowd, but people need to settle down.
Certain crowd?
I'm pretty sure lifetime sales of D2 have been upwards of 10M+ which puts it above virtually any other game out there. It (via the battle chest in recent years) regularly has placed in top 10-20 sales charts even as of a year or two ago; a game that is over 10 years old. Diablo isn't huge with a "certain crowd" it is straight up huge.
Yeah, the sales of the two games probably don't overlap enough to really hurt one or the other. I mean you could safely release a Final Fantasy and a Call of Duty on the same day and not really hurt each other.
But it's incredibly disingenuous to say that Diablo only appeals to a "certain crowd" as if it's a niche game.
I'm 34 and I don't really know what Diablo is outside of the rumblings I read on various forums. I don't think I've even seen video or screenshot of the game before in my life.
I don't even know what to say to that. My initial reaction would be to straight up call you a liar but I want to give you the benefit of the doubt.
It's just hard to swallow. Diablo is as ubiquitous to PC gaming as Mario is to console gaming. You effectively just said "I am 34 and have never seen, nor played, a Mario game in my life".
I mean, if you're not a gamer, or haven't been a gamer for a long time...maybe but otherwise? There's just no way. For the record I'm 31 and I upgraded my moms PC to 16mb of ram so I could play Diablo multiplayer. EDIT: I've been playing games since I can remember remembering, really.
If my wife told me she's never heard of Diablo, I'd believe her (well, prior to meeting me anyway); because she isn't a gamer and didn't grow up with games like I did. But someone posting on an internet forum for a webcomic about games...yeah, hard to accept.
I know I'm late on this, but, yeah, this isn't hard to swallow at all, honestly. I'm 25 and have been playing games since about the age of three, seriously following them since I was...11? 12?
If you showed me a screenshot from any Diablo game, I wouldn't be able to identify it. Nor would I be able to tell StarCraft from any other RTS. Maybe I could tell WoW from other MMOs, though my ex-girlfriend used to play Rift and honestly everything about it, down to the UI, looked exactly the same to me.
But that's simply because it's a platform I know nothing about. If they released a console Diablo III, I would likely check it out, especially since I tend to enjoy games like Marvel Ultimate Alliance that people call "Diablo clones" (though I really hated Torchlight)

There really ought to be a blog just for explaining totally insane Japanese game names.
Haha, Japanese are weird. But seriously, I am having a real hard time trying to figure out what the hell those games could even be. I have to think they must be some weird offshoot on those crazy Japanese dating sims.
The player's goal to charm pure, innocent girls from Granvania National Star God Academy, raise their affection for the Itsuki, then produce and take the "Star Children" to explore dungeons and battle "impurities".
However, it is not an "eroge",[4] as the "Star Children" are produced by pouring energy from Itsuki and one of the twelve "Star Maidens" into a particular device.[3] The child's class and statistics are determined off of which character parents the child; for example, certain combinations could result in creating a warrior, or someone who specializes in magic.[5] To produce more plentiful and more powerful “Star Children”, you must increase your intimacy with the twelve maidens, the other aspects of the gameplay is typical to dating simulation games.
There isn't a wiki article for the other one but it seems to be basically what I thought, a weird dating sim visual novel type thing where you play the father of several young girls with creepy overtones...
