This is a BRAND NEW event for PAX Prime 2012: An all day, curated private tour of the Seattle brewing scene. Visit four selected micro and nano breweries each in three distinct areas in and around Seattle. The goal: See 12 breweries in 12 hours while touring the area around Seattle and Kitsap.

IMPORTANT THINGS:

2. The bus tour is full, there are 30 seats. If seats become available, waitlisters will be contacted in order.
One Full ticket just became available
A ticket is available for the second portion of the tour (Odin, Lantern, NW Peaks, Naked City & Pillager's. Ticket cost is prorated.)

OP Text
1. This is a living post. Because this event is new and not entirely dialed in yet, things may change. Keep an eye out for updates here as we get more information. It will be an amazing all-day excursion about beer regardless.

3. Beer Map. Walking tours are shown for anyone who wants to go independently. The Bus tour is also shown.

4. There are 30 seats available.

5. A confirmed tour is set for Monday 9/3/12. There will be no Wednesday tour - most breweries declined a second tour.

6. For anyone doing any independent visits, Odin Brewing has been amazingly supportive of PAXation and generally supercool about this tour - they'd love to see you on Wednesday.

What is it?
A tour of Seattle and the area around it for beer lovers, whether you're local or coming in from out of town. Some more unusual, hidden gems will be included for any locals who might want to tag along and find new spots. It will also include some awesome area history, a ferry ride, restaurant stops, and the opportunity to see more than just the city.

The plan is to start in downtown Seattle, take a ferry across Puget Sound over to the Kitsap Peninsula, then back to Seattle and end up in Greenwood

What isn't it?
Unfortunately, this is not a low-budget event. It's a tasting excursion for beer lovers. Also, much like the Pub Crawl, this is not a frat boy event. We're trying to pace the liquor so that everyone has a good time, including the guy that you didn't puke on.

When is it?
Monday, September 3. 8 AM - 10 PM

The original date was Tuesday August 28, but a vote moved it to Monday the 3rd.
The intent was to pick a date that doesn't conflict with the Magical Mystery Tour and also allows Enforcers to attend.

What's included for the price?
• 12 Independent Breweries/Brew Pubs (12 is the target number, it may be a bit less)
• Guided All-Day Tour of Seattle, Bremerton, Poulsbo and Kingston
• Transportation, including Pickup at the Sheraton, Ferry & Designated Driver
• 3 Tastes or 1 Pint at each location (that's 36 tastes or 12 pints!)
• Picnic Lunch
• A keepsake Beer Passport and tour guide booklet with area history, brewery profiles and your own tasting notes
• Custom PAX Forum Beer Stein for you to keep and take home
• Beer snacks on the bus
• A great time with fellow beer-loving PAXers!

What's not included?
• Breakfast and Dinner Meals
• Additional Pints or Tastes after the prepaid ones
• Souvenirs
• Brewery Swag, bottles or Growlers

What's the itinerary?
The day starts at 8:00 AM, when the bus will leave from the Downtown Sheraton.
Head up to Edmonds and have breakfast on a scenic ferry ride across Puget Sound to Kingston.
The first leg of the tour visits 5 independent breweries on the Kitsap Peninsula.
Have a picnic lunch at one of the breweries in Poulsbo before heading down to Bremerton for the last brewery stop before the ferry.
2 Hour Travel Break: Stop at Fritz for a snack of belgian fries and beer while waiting for the ferry, or take a nap and Sober up on the ferry back from Bremerton to Downtown Seattle.
Arrive at the Seattle Ferry Dock at 4:00, where attendees have an opportunity to offload or onload.
Take a short ride south to Georgetown, where three more independent breweries await.
The final leg of the tour take place in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood, visiting a truly tiny nanobrewery.
Just a few blocks away, the tour wraps up in Greenwood, where you can pick your own dinner location between two brewpubs and a dozen restaurants within the same block.
Take the bus back to the Sheraton at 9:00 or 9:30 PM, including a dropoff at Café Mox/Card Kingdom for anyone who wants to wind up the evening with games and brews. And if that's not enough, optionally swing by Chuck's Hop Shop to pick up bottles to take with you.

How much does it cost?
$100 per ticket

Holy Moly! Why so expensive?

A bus or van rental costs money. Plus, the ferry for a large vehicle like a van or bus is pricey, but totally worth it if you're from out of town and want to experience the area. The ticket price also includes lunch, snacks, tastes at 12 breweries... it's actually pretty cheap when you figure it all together.

Any overruns in the ticket price will be either refunded on the tour, or you can donate that money to Child's Play.

Can I attend just a portion of the tour?
This isn't like the MMT. Sorry, but it's a different kind of event that's just not set up like that. We'll be loading people up onto a bus and driving them 30 miles or so out of town. Unless you have a car or are in the immediate vicinity of one of the stops, its unlikely that it would be possible to join or leave early.

However, for those of you that do find ways to join or leave mid-tour, there will be walk on rules and pricing specific to the part of the tour you were participating in. For example, if the bus is full, you'd have to find your own transportation. Also, some stops may need a count of people ahead of time in order to be ready for us, so we'd need an RSVP and prepayment for those folks, just like everyone else.

I have a better/different stop/place/brewery to suggest:
At this point, the tour stops have been pretty much locked in, so no more will be added to this one, sorry!

But don't let that stop you from bringing up ideas for future/alternate tours, or good walking tours to add to the Beer Map for forumers who aren't on the bus!

Suggest away! All suggestions are welcome but keep in mind that stops will be decided on the following criteria:

- Proximity to the tour route (plan on 15 minutes max between breweries)
- Hours (they need to be open, or willing to open for us)
- Size (no macro breweries, please)
- Willingness to accomodate the tour

How do I sign up and/or pay?
The pre-registered folks have gotten the registration link in their PA Inbox. The link will be posted here on June 15 for any remaining seats.

Do you need any helpers?
Yes!

Needed: Someone local who knows the area and is more entertaining than I am to MC the trip. Sadly, I am not so much funny.

Why a Beer Tour?
Seattle loves its beer. There are around 50 macro, micro and nanobreweries in and around the Seattle area, from small garage operations that sell growlers on the weekends, to large factories pumping out nationally distributed brews. Most Seattleites either home brew or know someone who does and the options here are amazing.

12 in 12? This sounds completely unrealistic.
I know, right? Even the planning is an adventure! If things get ridiculous, we'll pare the stops down. I've been in touch with some of the breweries already and people are pretty interested in hosting us but you never know - hence all the warnings about the schedule being tentative.

If you don't reach for the stars, you never get drunk. Or something.

EDIT: The brewer at Der Blokken said it couldn't be done. LET'S SHOW HIM WRONG!! (they have great beer, btw).

I can't go/It's out of my budget: Will there be another event later?

The Google Map at the top shows just about every beer-centric spot in the city, including 2 good walking tours that can be reached easily by bus or cab from downtown.

I love this idea, but I can't go on the Tuesday before due to work. :-(

I am guessing we're trying not to interfere with MMT and also get in for the [E]? Is there a way we could move it to the Monday (Labor Day) or Tuesday after? Or will people be too tired?

    1. You need to get a different job. Beer is Important
    2. Correct on all counts, though if enough people want to go on Monday, we could look at moving it.

I definitely can't argue with you on both my needing a different job, not that beer is important. The Catch-22 is that my job is needed to pay for my beer. If only I had a job that was all about consuming beer.

I love this idea, but yeah, getting an extra 2 days off and two extra nights of hotel are pretty tricky, even for such a worthy cause.

I like the Monday after PAX as well. Start up early, check out breweries at lunch, continue straight on through the afternoon, then catch a late flight back home. A fine way to end a PAX.

Cool! So one person tentatively for Tuesday, 2 for Monday.

One stop I really hope to get in here is Lantern Brewing - a tiny, tiny nanobrewery in Phinney Ridge which has amazing beers. So tiny in fact, that they can't even get their website completed.

I think most people are showing up Wednesday at the earliest...
Myself included, so if you move it to Wednesday, I am totally in!

As for interfering with the MMT, I don't think it would be a huge problem...
What the MMT usually does is have people sign up for each individual event and people can come and go throughout the day as they please.
Could be an idea for this event as well? Could fit nicely with the MMT.

I don't think it would work to attend for a partial day for this one. We're going to load people into a bus or van, and drive them 30 miles or so out of town, so there wouldn't really be any way to leave and/or rejoin the group unless you had a car.

As for having it on Wednesday, it's a possibility but I'd really like to avoid conflicting with the MMT if at all possible. We should give the thread a week or two to mature before making any decisions.

I'd be flexible for any of those days, actually. Ending the night in Ballard is pretty much perfect. I always wanted to check out more of the places in Georgetown. Does the ferry still sell beer? Not good beer, as I recall....

F Yeah! I've updated the OP with the first round of preferred tour stops. For anyone who doesn't know, 4 breweries per neighborhood is roughly half of the total available stops, so as stops potentially change, there are plenty of options to fill in.

@Saldek - the Ferries do sell beer, on tap even! Depending on the size of the boat, there's usually at least 2 taps available, 1 Megabrew like Budweiser and 1 Macrobrew like Pyramid or Alaskan Amber. The ferry trip from Seattle to Bremerton takes 1 hour, and the return trip from Kingston to Edmonds takes 30 minutes.

I have to second the vote for Maritime. They really seem to have the hoppy "Northwest Style" brews down to a science. Red Hook is a close second, but they're all the way out on the East side.

And.. not to sound too snarky, but if you want to try Seattle's IPAs outside of a brewery, go to any restaurant that brags about its beer. You'll find all IPAs and almost nothing else. Ugh. If I actually liked IPAs I'd be happy, but really restaurant? Do you even know that there are other kinds of beer out there? I swear, one day last year Cafe Mox had an IPA on every tap except one. KAAAAAHHHNNNN!!!

Awright! Map is Updated in the OP. Changes Are:

    - Websites and addresses have been added to all locations.

    - Walking tours have been added, with bus lines and suggested routes.

    - Pin markers have been color coded
Blue = MacroBrewery. Big operations that are likely to distribute their beer in other states.
Red = MicroBrewery. Smaller, more local operations. Usually with a pub, good local distribution.
Green = NanoBrewery. Tiny, independent operations. Hard to find beers, no pub or restaurant.
Yellow = Beer Store. Get yer bottles here.
Pink = BrewPub, Beer Garden, or Beer Tavern (no brewing on site). Includes offsite pubs for breweries and independent beer bars.

If I screwed up anything, just say so and I'll fix it. I'm not a web coder and had a tough time with the Google map.

Fierabend at 422 Yale Ave N is a good German beer garden (also serving German food, which I've heard is good). Not a brewery, but a decent number of taps, focusing on German imports. It's a bit out of the way from everything for PAX attendees, but if you're local, it's a good thing to note to get away from the IPAs.

Ok, I did a quick count to tally up the interest for different days. Please check the "interested parties" spoiler to confirm that I have your day preference(s) and quantity of interested folks correct. We'll still wait another week or so to make sure that people get a chance to read up and submit preferences.
