Yeah, Jaime is basically sent out to pacify the Riverlands. One gets the implication they think he was gonna go out there and bust heads but instead he cuts alot of deals.

A lot of that basic character development could be pretty easily shifted to Dorne. Land full of rightfully angry and resentful people who are ostensibly on your side needing to be placated in some fashion.

I know people hate a lot of the show changes, but they've been very very clever about finding ways to condense things.

When did they say river lands wasn't happening?

I wouldn't go so far as clever. Many of those changes have come off as silly imo.

Some I agree with, some I don't so much. They've got a certain ruthless efficiency to characters and plots that I admire even when it drifts into rough waters.

And I don't know that the Riverlands stuff has been explicitly dropped so much as all the teaser material and shooting leaks make it sound like Jaime at the very least is going to be spending his time in Dorne, while Brienne's story has been kept pretty quiet. It's not all necessarily gone, but they're definitely reworking some major aspects of it.

Oh man, I had forgotten Jonathan Pryce was the High Sparrow.

i honestly think this could become one of the highlights of the show and may even make up for the loss of Tywin/Charles Dance.

When they released this seasons cast list.

It's supposition and all but it's exactly the kind of stuff they've skipped because it would only feature Jamie from the main cast. Maybe Bronn if they worked him in as a replacement.

That and there was something about Jamie shooting scenes in Dorne like settings IIRC.

I really hope he doesn't take up Sir Whats-His-Adultery's Role in Dorne.

The guy who gets axed? That wasn't Adultery...was it? She just seduced him, wasn't married...he obviously wasn't.

So I heard Wyman Manderly has been axed from the show. This is like someone handing Dave and Dan everything they need for the best episode of the season, and them throwing that in the trash. I think they're determined to make this show as dumb and obvious as humanly possible.

are you sure about that? He's not a major casting announcement but he doesn't need to be, he could be in only two or three scenes for what he needs to do

they went to the trouble of including wendel manderly at the red wedding

I hope I'm wrong, I just heard online the popular rumor is that he's gone and being replaced with Sansa and Littlefinger or something.

I hope I'm wrong, I just heard online the popular rumor is that he's gone and being replaced with Sansa and Littlefinger or something.

I saw the genesis of that rumor, which was that the background of one of the half a second shots of Sansa looked like the crypts of Winterfell, and it went from that to "Sansa is replacing the fake Arya for the Bolton marriage" to "we didn't hear a casting of Manderly, so that must mean that Littlefinger is doing it!" Given it's all based off speculation from a trailer, I'd take it with a grain of salt.

No Manderly would disappoint, not surprise. The rest of that is stupid as hell, though, and I'd put no stock in it.

Also the fact there's no reason why an actor would know jack about anything, much less what an author is up to. He may as well have said it may come out tomorrow.

The nice thing about having started this series back in early 2000's is that I have literally stopped giving a shit about purported release dates. The next book will come out when the next book comes out. Other than that, there are plenty of other things to take up my time. For example: porn.

Which isn't to say that I don't desperately want the series to be published. But you can only spend so many years starving while staring at the pot when the toaster oven is perfectly usable.

He'll be taking up Darkstar's role, it'll give him some more practice at failing to murder children.

Now that the actor's cancer is in remission and he is looking to resume acting, as long as Ilyn Payne goes where Jaimie goes and assumes his proper role of the sarcastic mute teacher I'll be happy with the change.

Don't get me wrong; Bronn is good, great even, but he is not the King's Justice.

Is that a thing that is happening or just a hope? Seems unlikely.

  • Options

Well I think word would have gotten out if he was back, so I doubt Illyn Payne is in this season.

Maybe they'll find a way to bring him back in the next one.

    heh... ill, in pain.

Mainly a hope. I remember reading that Wilko Johnson said he'd like to continue GoT, and I'm pretty sure D&D said they'd like him back. I doubt it could possibly be this season due to scheduling except maybe as a brief cameo, but he might make it back for next season.

    i]Per his LiveJournal:[/i

I don't often attend the World Fantasy Convention (not to be confused with the World Science Fiction Convention, which I have only missed once thirty years), but I was there the last time it was held in Saratoga, and I had a great time. A terrific town, a wonderful con.

This year the convention is returning to Saratoga once again, and I was hoping to return as well. I'm not a guest of honor, and I'm not (so far as I know) getting an award; I just wanted to go.

Reluctantly, however, I've just had to scratch Saratoga off my list of 2015 appearances. For no reason having to do with the con itself. I am sure it will be terrific. It's just a matter of time.

I have too much to do. Too many things on my plate. Son of Kong foremost amongst them.

My apologies to anyone who saw Saratoga on my Appearances page and planned to go in order to see me. I won't be there. Go anyway. You'll have a great time.

Also, I have decided against attending this year's San Diego Comicon. Same reason. But since Comicon was never listed on my Appearances page, scratching it is not as big a deal.

(Should I complete and deliver WINDS OF WINTER before these cons roll round, I reserve the right to change my mind).

    That mother fucking troll.

I still don't think a Holiday 2015 release is out of the question. Season 5 might touch on minor bits of it but GRRM knows next year will royally fuck over the readers, he probably wants to get it out before April 2016 as badly as anyone.

As I think everyone suspected, or at least no one is entirely surprised, the show will be outpacing the books this season. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I don't have HBO or easy access to the show, and I just know someone will spoil whatever it is for me before I get a chance to read it.

Eh the show has diverged enough that I probably won't mind which one I experience first. I read the books a few months ago and aside from the first there was enough to them that I really enjoyed reading them.

Yea, at first I was annoyed at the odd content cuts and ridiculous new scenes but then I grew to appreciate what they meant for me in terms of spoilers. As the show deviates further from the books it won't be outpacing the books, it'll becoming more of a fan fiction ending. I'm sure we could go online right now and read dozens of fan fiction endings - and maybe some of them are even close to the real plot resolution. It wouldn't impact the real books for me.

Anyway the books will probably come out years after the show is done so we'll have forgotten parts anyway.

There's also the very real possibility that having the show end first will improve the book ending. It'll be a chance for martin to sort of test out some of the things he wanted to include in his books and see how people react to them. If anything bombs martin will have a chance to rethink how he wants to do things, and maybe even come up with some better ideas based off of fan feedback.

We started watching season 3 today. A bit of a slow start, but that's fine. We know what's going to happen. We both read the books. Kind of took a break from the show after watching the first two seasons by watching some other stuff. I have a bad feeling that my PS3 blu-ray player might be starting to show some troubling signs during playback. It froze up during the first scene where Kraznys is telling Daenerys about the Unsullied, then skipped ahead a little bit. It did this when I skipped back a bit too. I didn't notice any physical problems on the disc.

Had the same problem with Iron Man 2 last night, but I did notice some small circular scratches on that one (borrowed it from the library).

Anyway, I've got seasons 3 and 4 on blu-ray and will try to get through them, but probably won't be ready for season 5, which is fine. I've been spoiling myself on the show via this and the non-book thread for a while now.

More to the point, though, we should start using spoiler tags liberally.

I'd PM'd Jacobkosh about having a "hey, the shoe's on the other foot now" post in the show thread, but haven't heard back yet.

Maybe just one giant thread? Or stick to the current set-up...

Because if you think you are going to be able to go 'book only', continue talking online about the series, and not get spoiled for more than 2 seconds then you are horribly mistaken.

The 3 thread idea has been brought up before and shot down. I'd assume it just be spoiler tags as usual, but suppose we'll see what develops.
