They're putting themselves up. You're not actually buying a demon, you're buying a contract with a demon. Demons love contracts. The auction just lets them skip over the whole tedious negotiation process and cut right to the 'how much money you gonna give me' bit.
They do explain who set up the whole system, though.
okay, so by hunting down FOE's I get a bunch of exp, items that give me a ton of money, and a super strong persona, but the drawback tends to be that the Persona doesn't have many skills.
Except now you are telling me I can sacrifice them to give my other personas experience when I don't get rid of personas anyways until I've got all their skills unlocked for the compendium? Oh dear. Oh no.

I just started P3FES, first ever Persona game, is it usual to feel like crazy worried all the time that I am missing out on making like all these friends and stuff?? no, theyre buff and debuff moves i just shortened. aim/evasion debuff and whole party attack up. i usually take a few turns to pry for weakness, throw some holy bashing attacks in there, defend, heal, rinse repeat
