My solution: don't watch the trailers.
Amusingly enough, almost all the laughs in the theater came for Kevin and stuff from the trailers. The joke regarding Ed Begley's character also hit.

See that's why trailers are a no-win pox upon cinema. Either they're good and ruin what should be great moments in the movie, or they're terrible and fail to sell the movie.

It's very rare that someone makes a trailer that positively sells the movie without diminishing the movie itself, or better yet, a trailer that actually enhances the movie.

I think the Godzilla 2014 trailer was pretty great.

the one with the Oppenheimer voice-over? it's one of my favorite trailers.

Which one is that? I meant this one:

I really love that music used during the HALO jump, it's like it's designed specifically to poke me right in the fear bits at the base of my spine:

For some reason it's scrubbed off YouTube, but here it is - it's a teaser from comic con 2012, the first time I remember hearing about a new Godzilla movie.

    Still gives me chills.

    So anyways, Ghostbusters related.

They should be arrested for at the very least manslaughter. Might even be yet another hilarious jab at controversy.

I don't believe anyone was claiming that it was "the penultimate result of theatrical art."

We're saying that the stories told by Shakespeare, contrary to your stated opinion, are:

    A. Relatable
    B. Relevant
    C. Enjoyable to the masses
    D. Not boring
    E. Not tired.

No, absolutely no one here said that. I have had it said, repeatedly, by many people tho.

And all of those are your stated opinions.

    I love Shakespeare

But sometimes I think we give him too much credit for his poetry

Like, yeah, I would be able to fit everything into a rhyming scheme if I made up words, too

Good question. I blocked out most of two. Maybe?

    Only three total, though, so...

Although if that's true, it's hilarious that this crime is the one that they skate by on.

He was meant to die. There was a chalk outline.

They edited the film so you don't see the outline to leave it ambiguous, but that actually hurts the film to since he was a big detractor of them and you never hear from him again. Murray's character being dead is actually better in that regard.

Also, c'mon, that old guy is dead after being blown out of a two story window.

I wouldn't doubt it. The Ghostbusters killing a guy is not a good look.

He wasn't supposed, to, though :). That's why the scene is done as it was.

    Feig
“We actually talked about [having him come back as a ghost],” reveals Feig, “but we made it so you’re not quite sure if he got killed or not. I originally shot it where you see the chalk outline of him, with his hat and cane also outlined, but we wanted to leave the door open to Bill Murray, which he loved.”

Does it work better with him alive or dead? Especially given that it's shot in a way that implies death, but is ambiguous? Both cause problems, honestly, and don't help the film.

It depends on what you look at.
Feig says they left his fate murky in case they wanted to bring him back. The Forward to the book says he survived (because he wrote the forward), but Erin says later in the book that the Forward was written by a ghost.

Relatable absolutely is not. You cannot have someone who had never heard of Shakespeare pick up any of his plays and understand what's going on. The language and references are far too removed to be grasped any more without being explained.

THAT is cold solid fact and the main problem I have with all of them.

we work hard to access shakespeare's meaning because he was a dead set genius, embedding a profoundly progressive humanism into pulpy stories of sex, war and horror. he had to fight censors to code his radical and very nuanced philosophies on everything from equality, human thought, religion and even the nature of a potentially infinite universe. he was also the finest satirist we've seen and his command of irony and the unexpected drives his plays like a motor: why do we watch yet another version of a cheesey old italian love story? because this one starts with a gang war. what do we do with an apparently noble general who is only certain of his abilities in the tented field? we take his war away.

he was a modernist 300 years before modernism, and his intensely interesting and entertaining work is available to us all. you don't have to like it, but if you shit on it you only show you don't understand

Rudy Giuliani was the 9/11 New York mayor who was notable for 'cleaning up' the city (possibly by having the homeless loaded into trucks and dumped in the bay). He also ran for the Republican presidential ticket a bunch of years back. He's the most notable New York City mayor since La Guardia.
