Just about every creative decision from Donkey Kong to Super Mario Bros was made as a way to work with or around technical limitations

Mario is a carpenter (and later a plumber) because giving him suspenders made it easier to distinguish his arms from his torso

He has a mustache to add more definition to his face

He can shrink and grow because small Mario made more sense gameplay-wise in the early form of the game's design, and that's how he looked in Mario Bros., but big Mario gave them the opportunity to draw a higher fidelity sprite. You grow with a mushroom as a reference to Alice in Wonderland

    Etc etc

I got really, really excited that the survey had questions about Border Break and Virtual On.

And then got really sad that the entire back half was about mobile games.

The smart phone game for border break is like, the pinnacle of everything awful about Japanese mobile game design distilled into a single app.

Like, I know folks think we have some grindy, microtransaction, pay to win, time sink garbage over here but holy shit the stuff they've got in Japan is far worse.

I don't understand the popularity of mobile games.

But I guess I'm so used to controllers I rarely find a tiny touchscreen to be a good input method.

yeah, the average person is not going to pay 100+ dollars for a dedicated portable gaming device when they can play games on the thing they already own and carry everywhere

3DS, Vita, and iOS/Android are all mobile gaming platforms that all have good stuff on them.

Some folks might not have a smart phone so spending the cost of a handheld (especially if they go for a previous generation) might be a pretty good deal for them, some folks may have a powerful smartphone and therefore not see the need for a handheld, some folks want both!

There are darn good games on smart phones, turn based stuff, card games, and other stuff all can work really well on a smart phone. There are a lot of great digital boardgames on there. There is also god awful microtransaction laden garbage fires but, hell, that's on every gaming platform these days

Yes, some game types work alright on phones, but not all. The lack of dedicated inputs is a problem for other stuff.

If it weren't for Fantasy War Tactics, then my mobile games platform would be a lot more stale. But it's an actual SRPG on the mobile platform!

I used to have a few fun RPG or management style games on my phone/iPad but they eiither stopped updating, got the data lost when my phone died, got the data lost some other way, or ran out of interesting content.

Oooh, Fantasy War Tactics looks pretty neat, I may have to grab that.

Most of my iOS gaming has been roguelikes (868 HACK and Hoplite) and tower defense. With the occasional odd standout title like Device 6.

Mobile and portable are not the same platform or market! They are as different as the PC and console markets were in the early 90's.

Eh, Super Mario was closer than Mario to what he looked like in Mario Bros. But yeah, agreed otherwise.

What gets me is when they lump in his white gloves with that, seeing as they never appeared white in-game until Super Mario World.

Fantasy War Tactics is great! It's grindy as all hell, but in a good way. It uses paper/rock/scissors as the battle triangle, literally.

If you want to get started, I would suggest getting it now. They are doing some promotion this month, and you can collect some items that basically let you purchase super rare stuff for free AND they have some exclusive characters that may disappear after the promotion is over. And these characters are good. If I could have started the game with them, I would have been so money.

Super BunnyHop is a very good videomaker.

He made three long videos about the Witcher games and they're awesome and I love them even when he's critical, because he's smart and articulates himself well

I don't understand the significance of this particular pi day shenanigan. Is this a reference to Crush 40, or hinting that something will be announced on April 10th, or some other joke I've totally missed?

Also, it annoys me that there are five stacks of eight pies instead of four stacks of ten.

He also helped bringing chili dogs back into the public consciousness, and basically saved the chili dog industry in the 90's.
