I'm nearly through Green on the Set Review now and Whippy while I certainty was on board with disliking Owen after those Twitter incidents, I'm really not hearing anything in this that would illicit the "still a jerk" comment. I'm not saying he's NOT still a jerk but I feel like I'm missing something. He's actually doing a pretty solid job as a guest host in the roughest single episode type to guest on. His analysis is excellent (personality aside, he IS a great player), and his irrational hate/fear of "Eldrazi Werewolf" is actually funny. As the episode has gone on, his rythm has also improved and he sounds a lot less dour (it's possible he just really hated the Blue cards in the set, which makes sense given their nature and the way he talked about liking to draft)

Fate also had nearly 0 cards for standard. The only ones I can remember are that green one drop, the red siege, and Brimaz

Brimaz was Born of the Gods

Fate had Tasigur, Ugin, Valorous Stance, Arashin Cleric, Silumgar, Crux, Heelcutter, Kolaghan, Mastery of the Unseen, Monastery Mentor/Soulfire, Temur Battle Rage, Wild Slash, Whisperwood... it definitely made its impact on Standard

drafting it was hot garbage though, especially after triple Khans

Yeah Limited is where Fate sucked. To be fair, it's highly unlikely ANY set would have actually IMPROVED upon 3x KTK which was a PHENONIMAL Limited Environment, even an average or good set would have been a dissappointment. But Fate wasn't good nor average. It was below average and then following KTK made it seem abysmal.

Buddy of mine invited me the pre-release tonight. I haven't played in over a decade.

Hopefully the shop we're going to won't mind if I'm just hanging around watching.

EDIT: Oh, wait. This format looks very simple. Maybe I will play after all. :)

Ugh, Joel Larsson just tweeted his agreement with a video of Milo Yiannopoulos talking about feminism.

This from a pro who has been on (at least) one Community Cup team with female teammates.

"Disappointing" is the nicest word I have on hand at the moment.

I really wonder how much those foil double faced Zombie tokens are gonna be worth. Id love to try to buy a few off people at the Pre-release. I want a whole bunch to just take out in every future limited format ever that needs zombie tokens.

I was debating this, and I mostly thought... well, I mostly thought "fuck counterspells", but also that investing four specific colored mana on an enchantment is a pretty big deal in anything but commander, so you should get some value out of it even if it gets countered. And also to just sidestep any flicker abuse for infinite +1/+0 anthems.

calibur-death asked: What set after alara block are you least proud of?

Battle for Zendikar. It’s my worst personal design in a decade.
I'm late to the party, but:

When fucking Theros is less bland, uninspired and not interesting, you really fucked up. I understand the need for lower-power sets, but BFZ is also boring. That's unacceptable, and is 100% the fault of design. Also, this WOTC idea of writing characters with focus groups is awful.

I would have rather gone back to Dominiara than Zendikar. I never liked the plane in the first place. It just seemed like Shards of Alara without the Esper, Bant, Grixis and Jund.

Some of the flavor of it was leaning heavily on "wild", but it did actually work nicely (the original two sets I mean). Like, traps are an interesting mechanic (that admittedly mostly whiffed due to too-hard conditions). The quest cards are an amazing mechanic - they're flavorful "build around me" that appear at all levels of complexity and reward.

I mean, as a theme, "adventure into the ever-shifting unknown wilds" is good, and you can tell good stories from that. But then they had the bright idea of the fucking Eldrazi.

I didn't play during original zendikar block so I can't talk from any place of experience with it

but I liked the distilled, general idea I get of the plane that first time around just thumbin through cards. I liked the eldrazi turn, too, until it was everywhere, though it sucks that it was at the expense of a cool plane people liked

So is that literally three blocks/planes in a row that they've introduced a really cool and popular setting and then worked their hardest to ruin everything and take away all the cool shit everyone loved in the interest of this cohesive storyline that nobody important realized is pretty terrible

they're destroying planes a little too frequently, I think

I'm not going to say they should never do it, because that would be silly

but it should be very rare, so that when it does happen it carries enormous weight

also I am sad about Mirrodin, it was the plane of my childhood, along with Kamigawa

and now it is not there anymore

    at least Kamigawa is safe

since they're never going back there

This is pretty much the biggest issue.

They want to print Planeswalker cards since they're super popular and always mythic, which means they need to find an excuse for at least five planeswalkers to be involved in a story line in every block.

Especially....I mean shit, they're going into a block that they want to keep low power. Why not tell a story that is some regional conflict that is interesting and is more low stakes.

Going "okay guys, we need to low ball the power in this set. Let's see what we can come up with" and then ending up with "tons of eldrazi, wide reaching end of the world events, cats and dogs etc etc" seems totally backwards.

Go back to Jamuraa, then you have a great mix of nations, nomadic tribes, wizards and a great setting that can match what you're looking to do at the right power level. Get some real characters in there that you can print as legendary cards. Skip planeswalkers in the first set and then have them arrive in second, or someone become a planeswalker.

They need to hire some writers that can produce an interesting story and not be shackled by the need to stick a bunch of planeswalkers in everything.

Going to a two set block format seems to have exacerbated the problem.

Edit: They could never do justice to Mirage block art though.

But I hate what they have done to the story and the effect that has on what other cards can appear in a set.

i think part of the problem is that the eldrazi plotline was a mistake from the start, but it's something you HAVE to resolve, can't just leave it a hanging mystery forever

when you don't actually have to tell a story, big threats like the eldrazi and the phyrexians can be these cool abstract horrors that exist as something thematic, as a pulse in the background

when you have to actually narrate what's going on with them? you have the stories where superman fights doomsday. so you've got this character who is pretty one-note and simple like doomsday, and because he is so one-note and simple, all the story you tell with superman is "superman punches him" which is the opposite of good superman storytelling. the eldrazi are a story that magic both wanted to wrap up because you can't do much with it, but ALSO it's the worst possible story to debut their new character-focused storytelling with, because you have very little character work that can happen

but over the past few years they've also made a conscious effort to make a lot more smaller planeswalker villains, which is good because you can use people like Vraska or Ob Nixilis to tell much smaller-scale stories with actual character development, so on one hand i'm optimistic for the future

on the other hand? there's a very real chance we run into scale problems again when we return to the phyrexian story.
