I keep meaning to try salvia but I never have a chance where I'm going to be completey by myself for a day or so, which really, if I'm going to be in a disscociative state it's best to not be near me.

You only need about 15 min. It wears off VERY quickly and usually only lasts about 5 or 10 min before you pretty much are over it.
You can take salvia sub-lingually, but the effect will be much milder. Smoking is the preferred method but if you use a regular pipe, it'll be pretty harsh. If you have a bong (I don't because I light up so rarely), that'll work best because the smoke will be cooler and you'll be able to hold it in longer.
edit: fari oh god no, you don't smoke it like a joint because the leaves are too weak to have any noticeable effect unless you smoke an ungodly amount and the concentrated form is basically little crystals of the extract

you can smoke weed in a tobacco pipe. But you should get a screen for it if your going to do that. Compared to a regular glass pipe you might be wasting some weed. It'll get you high the same anyways.

Dosage
Salvia leaves: ¼ gram – 1 gram
Salvia extract 5x: 0.1 – 0.3 gram
Salvia extract 10x: 0.05 – 0.15 gram
so a gram of 20x should go quite far
