Back to regular(-ish) shenanigans this week, from the beautiful environs of Whitby - where you may recall Clarkson took the BMW i8 in his former life - to the very different but equally stunning scenery of a very literal Grand Tour in Italy. But someone is bound and determined to deliberately not "get it"... with a somewhat over-repeated joke, again, but at least this was miles better than the soldiers bit last week.
Plus Clarkson makes good on his bet from episode 1.
Worth noting is that apparently, in its latter years, TG had become subject to documentary rules at the BBC, so the presenters became less able to create scripted full-on fiction than they had previously. This episode shows, as if any proof were needed, that they do not have that restriction at Amazon.
Look out for the briefest glimpse of a McDonald's - fittingly funny in context.
As with last week, they only manage to kill one beloved celebrity.

This was so beautiful to watch, even Hammond having to ham it up like he's still trying to be Mr. TV couldn't ruin it. James' blue RR against that green and yellow of Italy, just fantastic.
And it looks like Jeremy tried to get rid of a bug on his nose by punching it. He does that some times.
You could tell they were really happy to be back in England and in front of a home crowd, that made the tent parts better than the previous two.
Maybe they just really liked Edge of Tomorrow. (Can't blame them.) And thought, "let's do that!" And it didn't work because EoT was lightning in a bottle.
Does "lightning in a bottle" mean "not as good as the book" now?

Didn't read the book, but i thought the movie was a lot of fun!
Casino lifestyle as the best of the episode. Blasting through tunnels is something I do in my car, so I had to laugh at that. And really, Clarkson used to own a Ford GT that had worse mileage than the Hellcat, so I don't know where he got off talking shit.

I was wondering if they were going to mention the GT and the France trip, or if it being on the old show trumps the real life experience Clarkson had of actually owning the GT.

I don't get to "the book was better" very often. Let me have this one.
Well, the holy trinity cars were the exact same cars on the exact same track as the one Chris Harris did. It's super unlikely that any manufacturer has a lot of pres cars. Especially really high end ones.

Is that why Mazda never made the Furai, because Top Gear burned the only copy they had?
Not much to say about the last two episodes other than to mirror the view that yes, they crossed some invisible line into too much/too obviously scripted content.
Yes we all know the content on top gear is scripted but having it so blatantly shoved in your face that it's forced slapstick removes a lot of the fun.
If for whatever reason you can't catch it on the BBC, the episodes should be up on Youtube not long after they air. The previous series was, anyway.

good episode, interesting challenge with the cars that had some bad scripted bits but Hammond's was actually clever, especially the go-faster flower stripes. James' was so bad that either he's not as smart as he pretends he is or got the bad draw in drawing straws for the cars. And those traffic lights they showed in conversation street, WTF.
American is back, as is them staying in Whitby. That's something I would have expected if they were still on the BBC, not flush with all that money, unless Jeremy used it to buy a new house.
One thing I have a question on: since the BBC let Clarkson go it seems he's allowed to do reviews around their new track, but the others aren't, as though they might still have some clause in effect to not do track reviews like they used to, because they essentially quit and weren't fired?
This should have been a vintage episode. On TG it probably would have been. But the scripting was even more painfully in evidence this time. It robs it of life; there's little sense of spontaneity. And the flashes of it that do appear show just how good it could be, which makes it a bit sadder.
I'm starting to feel like this show has too big of a budget for its own good.
Hammond's flower go-faster stripes were great. One of the best moments.

And finally... NO AMERICAN.
Best episode yet? I think so.
Also, here is The Guardian's review.

I'll just pretend ep 2 never happened.
I'm quite enjoying it, though I haven't gotten to the a stupid american stupidly drives a stupid car on a stupid track part yet.

yay! They didn't do it. That was great.

I guess producer challenges are one of things from the old show that they can't do anymore.

he's probably moving to Washington. it's not like ge would have let them blow up a house he still wanted to live in.
I'm guessing it is a lawn sculpture for his new place.

I mean, it was obviously contrived, but still amusing.
