This looks to be incredibly awesome. I hope there's some form of split-screen, though. I want to play with my roommates.
Edit: wait, what? No playing a game because of checkpoints?
... What? Like, I prefer save-anywhere, but I can see where that's not necessarily the point of this game. It's about seeing how well you can play the level with your pals, not just getting to the end. Plus, I don't think I've ever seen a multiplayer save-anywhere system outside of Sins of a Solar Empire.
There you go. Just turn your back to every empty hallway and run into dark rooms without a flash light.
Sometimes I think I'm the only person with the mental capacity to survive a zombie holocaust. I would never trust some of these people playing these games to make it!
:P
Play your little zergling game all you want.
Uh, that's the entire premise of the game from it's origin. I don't see how checkpoints changes any of that.

Seriously. Like these people running around in circles shooting eachother.
Just stay in one place and shoot everything!
If you're infront, duck so you don't get shot in the back!
Because one player dying two minutes into a map and then spending 20 minutes watching the other three play is really fun.
I have no problem with teammates being revived once the others make it to a checkpoint.
But if the whole team is wiped out? Whatever happened to game overs? Fucking hand holding bullshit just ruins any sort of accomplishment and negates any fear in the process.
If this is just an option then I am still all in. But if it's enforced, ugh.
Hopefully it's just an ability they give to people demoing the game.
Yeah, yeah that's it.
Please.
Even if it was a standard rule, you know that the community would provide plenty of no-respawn servers, just as they provide plenty of specialized servers for TF2, etc.

I thought this was how they were handling it. I recall an interview stating that even if a team was alright they could expect to get through the game maybe 25% of the time implying that a game over was possible. Did some new info come out of E3 besides the new character redesigns? I glanced over most of the news posts since there was very little new material.
Our group got close to making it to the end, but unfortunately it fell just short of the ultimate goal. Thankfully, you're given the ability to restart from the most recent checkpoint, but all the emotion you put into surviving still makes it quite a downer when you fail to do so.

Most people don't have the time to do that anymore. Game overs were an excuse to make games short.
If checkpoints are busting your balls in this game, you are missing the point.
You have guns, there are zombies, you shoot them.
This is all the formula I need.

But, the scenarios are short.
This could also seriously impact the game's longevity.
Yeah, I'm not really liking the whole checkpoint thing either. But then again, we'll only be able to see how it works when the game comes out. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a server option either.
Speaking of servers, has there been any word of how servers will work? I don't doubt there'll be public dedicated servers, but this is more of a "start the game, invite your buddies, blast zombies" type game than "go online and kill tons of people" like TF2.
So I want to just be able to start a game and invite buddies to join, or have them join my server via the friends list.

I haven't been able to find anything, but it has been said that improved matchmaking for Steam will launch alongside L4D.
Uh, yeah, checkpoints have been in from the very beginning. And the campaigns are all 2-3 hours long, so not having checkpoints would be pretty harsh. This has, first and foremost, been focused as a multiplayer game, and forcing a complete restart when you fail right at the end is not a good design for multiplayer games. There's multiple difficulties anyway, so you should still be able to get your masochistic fix from it.

If they release episode 3 at the same time and bundle them in a box I will do something that comically illustrates how cool I think that is.
I am THAT crazy.
Hopefully Phunkytown isn't too far from Quebec or your gas is gonna be a bitch.

Checkpoints.
No longer purchasing this game.

I thought dead players were turned into zombies?
EDIT
Wooo top page.
I claim this page for our future zombie overlords.

*Damage indicator says you're getting attacked from behind, so stand completely still and shoot at that one zombie stuck on a window.*
Yeah, yeah that's it.
Please.
But seriously, it looks ridiculously fun regardless of No Names' digressions.

I think it'd do a lot for the community as well. Less run and gun when if you all die it's game over.
That last sentence is so... pandering.
Steam Friends, or a Server that you trust.
That kind of thing.
Winter 2008 is going to ruin me.

Please do a better job of optimizing Left 4 Dead than you did for TF2.

Step 1: Show boss all of the videos I linked you to of all these E3 games.
Step 2: Ask for a raise.
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit!
