A Serious (SE++ Serious) question

edited January 2008 in Social Entropy++
Okay guys, I just found out that the provincial Wildland Firefighting authority is hiring seasonal wildland firefighters. Do you think I should apply? Relevant information:

The job pays about $15-16 an hour, plus remoteness allowance where applicable, most likely 40+ hours per week (1.5x for regular overtime, 2x for call ins). Most of the time I'll probably be on scene or in camp, and I'm fairly sure the employer provides sleeping/food arrangements.

For comparison, my current job pays about $21 an hour, pretty much only 40 hours per week. I have a $700/month single bedroom appartment, plus about $250/month in utilities.

I'm not specifically trained for wildland firefighting, but I do have 7 years experience as a volunteer firefighter (with certifications in Level 1 Firefighting, Vehicle Extrication, and Scene Management).

I'd most likely be gone from May until September, living in Mid or Northern Manitoba, running towards or away from Forest Fires.

I'm 6'1", and currently about 270 pounds. I can almost pass a packtest now (50lb pack, 5 Kilometers, 45 minutes) and am fully capable of dropping an additional 40lbs by May.

Thoughts?*

*Joke options Larlars need not apply.

CoxDixLol Welcome.

    Unless you are planning some elaborate scheme wherein SE++ makes all your decisions in life for you, I would say that no amount of advice that we give you (if even possible in this situation) could give you anything even remotely close to reasonably good results.

    If you want to do it then do it. If you don't want to do it then don't do it.

    I most likely wouldn't be able to get my old job back, but because it is a seasonal job, when I get layed off in September I would fully qualify to collect Unemployment Insurance until I found a new job as a Network Admin, or my brother could probably get me a job as a Labourer for heavy construction.

    Whoever's running the initiative would choose which decisions should be put to a vote. Some of them would be small and some of them would be big.

    But yeah the feasibility of this would be pretty much nil.

    Mostly this is a purely masturbatory idea as I just love the idea of running the initiative and in essence running someone's life. Bahaha.

    Two years ago I dropped 60 pounds in five months, without altering my diet. My current weight has more to do with a sedentiary lifestyle and poor diet than anything else. I know I can safely drop the fat in that timeframe.

    Feel free to elaborate on your first point, how you think it's not a good idea.

    You're giving up a higher paying job to work for a temp job with no concrete plan for when it ends after a few months. Also, if you're having to live onsite or whatever you won't exactly have much freedom.
