I constantly get whispers to tank and I'm ret. Now, I have trouble getting groups for anything because I'm ret and not a tank/healer. Everyone refuses to bring me along as a dps.
Find a friend that also plays a dps class. You now have inviting power to others, as there are two of you.
I get three whispers or so a day to go pug tanking. I don't do it mind you but I get the whispers. There might be pockets of servers still opposed to the idea but I'm thinking over all the concept we can't is dieing if not dead. I remember the days when everyone believed we couldn't and I know what it's like today.
I don't think the problem is that people think we CAN'T tank, its that when it comes to 25man raid bosses, they still think we shouldn't.

This.
A thousand times this.
I still have all my tank gear because of this.
I'm yet to see a ret pally do dps comparable to that of the standard dps classes. Being a pally myself, I've a bit of a soft spot for them and like to give them a go, but every time I do they fail to pull their weight. I expect others have had similar experiences.
So, Paladin thread. What's up with Righteous Defense not working about 50% of the time? No resist, just costs mana and resets the cooldown. It worked flawlessly every time prior to 2.4, then it just kind of fell apart.

Haha, don't know what to tell you other than what you already know. My friend has a Paladin and I've heard him complaining about this exact same thing, it seems they messed something up in the process of changing it, no workarounds/cryptic reasons for it that he's found.

Just rolled a paladin. Just bought the game in April... been playing my Hunter pretty much exclusive. Once I got into higher level's I keep wanting to tank. Tried a Warrior, but settled on a Pally. Only at level 5 (just created him last night). Going to Prot spec him so I can tank but if needed I can always respect Holy, etc, if my guildies need it more. Just seems more versatile than a Warrior.

EDIT: Talking about 5man situations.
Much like arms warriors, the retadin requires WF to do top tier damage. Also a great deal of their utility is lost since keeping up multiple judgments is extraneous in 5 man situations. Don't forget that now your dps can get an offensive blessing+ salv, so they get a boost (also 2% from sanctity). Furthermore, judging crusader is often a bit silly in a 5 man once you have good dps, as it will not allow for JoB or JoCasino for at least 8 seconds.
Also vengeance can fall off in a 5 man between pulls. This also hurts. Plus, without JoW and an emphasis on burst, many 5 mans can drain a retadin reasonably quickly (at least from what I've seen looking on the outside). This may be different for horde pallies using SoB.
You also probably played with some RETards. Also, gear dependent spec blah blah blah.
That being said... I did get to do a Ramps and BF run with an at level group and two of the DPS were Ret. (me and another from my guild) and we blew through both places like nothing.
Wow. just got done doing Gruul and got the nicest upgrade, i got the Aldori Legacy Defender. The funny yhting is that just like last week i got the shield off nightbane.

I have the ZA shield but I still reeeeallly want the ALD. The ZA shield is good and all but I want something with defense on it so I can have some flexibility

Yeah the ZA shield is nice cause of the block rating, i threw my 15 stam amani jewel in my defender. I feel kinda bad cause i out rolled another tank who had the SL shield for it, but i was liek fuck that thats a rare shield im rolling on it. Blew his roll out of the water. Just hopin for the Amani Punisher, Pauldrons of Stone Resolve, and Jungle Stompers from ZA, best part is im goin to ZA now.

Replace the Stone Resolve with t4 or t5 if you can, they really are better paladin shoulders
I have t4, but i was looking at the Pauldrons and they have mroe stam and block rating on them than my t4. Really really hoping for the Amani Punisher though, and the jungle stompers.

I have. These days, when I'm not at top or very close to top of the charts at the end of the 5-man run, it's a rare occurance. They just gotta gear up and understand melee DPS mechanics and they'll do fine.

block rating is no longer very relevant at your gear level, you should be swapping it for dodge and parry
stamina is a fair bit, but you trade stamina for spell damage, which is really important
Also, the Sabatons of the Righteous Defender from G'eras, the old badge vendor, are better than Jungle Stompers.
i figured block rating was better than dodge for paladins since a bulk of threat comes from holy shield, and still allows me to take damage which means mana back on heals.

Problem is, with Ret Pallies, I tend to feel that even if they're doing good DPS now, a lot of it is due to melee gear scaling. Who knows how things will be after WotLK.

a bulk of threat comes from Holy Shield at low spell damage amounts, like, beginning Kara.
however it has a ridiculously low spell-coefficient. i do not know the maths, but i know that essentially it will do maybe 10 more damage per block with more spell damage, so as you gear up it is less and less important.
so what starts to pump out the bulk of my threat with higher amounts of spell dmg, consecration and judgements?

to clarify the Holy Shield point...Holy Shield is still a significant part of your threat ~15% if i remember right from my last Recount check, but its a non-scaling significant part

I'm fairly sure, considering how they raised PvE ret from "we won't bring a ret into our raid, except as a joke" to "progression raid night, we're going to need one in here", they won't do something weird with melee gear scaling in the expansion that drops them back below. Especially considering DKs are going to be using that melee gear, too.
Prot DPS in 5-mans is fun. The last time I did SH I think I did upwards of 800,000 damage according to the meters. Got beat by a hunter in my guild though.
We would always be prot pala + ret pala + priest (me) + 2 randoms for heroics. Back when PI was 20% spell damage I would love using it on the prot pala so we could lol as he ended up 2nd or 3rd on the damage meters (Was reaching 600-800dps over a run depending on the place).
Well ive decided to get off my lazy ass and AV honor farm for the S1 mace to replace my CF Sword. although i know that once i do, im gonna get the Amani Punisher from ZA. Im really hoping for the Amani Punisher when i do ZA tommorow.

we have been over this
the only people that think paladins can't tank 25 mans are crazy and or not worth playing with

It was more fun when we were fighting the man. He was trying to keep us in the back and healing.

And playing my rogue has definately helped me blow off some stress and makes me want to tank again.
I can tank everything but the actual Gladiator packs with just this junk that I ninja'd from warriors in Kara.
Also: Darkmoon Card: Vengeance get! 8-)

Yes. Christ it's fucking annoying.
