Kentucky is not the Deep South, as some people in here seem to believe, and even being part of the 'South' in general is debatable. People in Tennessee certainly will tell you that we aren't.
Also, the idea that you just say "fuck off" to an entire region of the country because they're draining your tax dollars is kind of... insulting, and doesn't sound particularly liberal or progressive either. The reason social conditions are so bad in Kentucky is because, it's a) completely impoverished and b) extremely uneducated. The only way these social problems are ever going to be fixed is if substantial money from outside the state is invested into it on a New Deal-level. It should have been done decades ago (and probably would have if, as LBJ said, The Great Society hadn't got shot down over Vietnam). And before you say anything about governors refusing stimulus money, Kentucky's governor is a democrat and most people here are pretty open to the idea of something that creates new and decent jobs (because, you know, they're fucking poor and most people don't want to stay that way).
It's mostly a backlash against the politicians who abloo blo bloo about the federal government being all evil but are still holding their hand out for cash.

This right here. The bulk of power is held by Texas's senate which, in turn, is controlled by the Lt. Governor.
Who currently is way fucking more dangerous ideologically than the governor.
Right. The Governor of Texas appoints a few fairly minor positions. Most of those positions have six year terms, so it's possible for a Governor to end up only appointing a few dozen minor posts. And just about every political position with any kind of power is an elected position. So the Governor is left with his veto powers, something most Texas governors use sparingly.
Guys.... I'm having a breakdown here. I need someone to explain to me how people can exist in our society that are this stupid and ignorant.

1) Does it benefit the parent corporation for the public to know about it?
2) Does it fit a pre-existing narrative that they have been focusing on? (So, if an ACORN employee murders his wife because she's fucking the neighbor, this would be national news)

I'm not terribly familiar with the area but aren't the extremely rural parts of the south, including state and national forests, often used by people to grow cannabis? I mean I've heard stories of these people setting traps and sometimes taking shots at FDA agents who go looking for their grow patches. If these people are crazy anti-government activists and involved in an illegal drug trade, I think they would be way more likely to get violent and perceive a census worker as a threat.

See, I can see the possibility that he wandered into a grow-field/meth-lab. But what I don't see is the kinds of guys that run those operations hanging the body and writing "fed" on it, because that tends to attract attention. And the last thing that people growing pot or cooking up meth want is attention in their general vicinity.

This is definitely true, and the people who do these sorts of things are absolutely crazy. You should hear the stories of the booby traps and such like the park rangers sometimes find around these peoples' operations; they're seriously disturbing. As in - punji stick pits, fish hooks hung on fishing line in the trees at eye level (these things are particularly sinister because they're nearly invisible and can basically destroy your eyes), razor wire traps and who knows what the fuck else. As I said, these people are fucking crazy.
Parks are particularly prone to have these people on them because any drugs found there can't be tied to any specific person's property.
Display of the body seems like a very unwise move, but they're obviously insane anyway or they wouldn't be making their living cooking meth in the middle of fucking nowhere in the first place.

the thing about cooking meth in the middle of nowhere is that you would like to continue cooking meth in the middle of nowhere
even crazy stupid people have certain areas of cunning, the "he stumbled on some illegal drug operation" explanation just doesn't hold water
Also, yeah, drug dealers/cookers/growers don't like to draw attention to themselves. If they did this, they would have put him in a place where he wouldn't have been found.
The last thing a drug dealer wants to do is draw attention
killing a federal employee is pretty high on the list of drawing attention. Especially with the media attention the FBI's gonna be all up in their shit now.

With the mentality of people like this, they very easily could have thought that hanging the guy's body as some kind of sick "warning" would keep an investigation from happening.
I will be very surprised if the culprit doesn't end up being involved in the drug trade somehow. Because as many people have pointed out, both in this thread and in the news, it's a problem of epidemic proportions in that part of the country, and many of these criminals are not in the least bit shy about attacking law enforcement officers, even though they're fully aware that if they do so the shit will probably hit the fan.
Hell, I know of someone who got rich enough to own his own helicopter and he said there were certain parts of the state he had to avoid because if he flew over them he'd get shot at. If these people are willing to fire upon what they think are DEA helicopters they're not going to balk at murdering a census worker and leaving the body where someone can find it.
I think a lot of people in this thread are having a problem of holding hammers and seeing everything as a nail here. The rise of right-wing violence is undeniable and it needs to be stopped, but that does not mean every single act of violence is tied to it somehow.

It is hardly unreasonable to believe this murder is politically motivated, given the circumstances of his death. If you didn't have such familiarity with the drug situation there, you'd probably be at a loss to provide an apolitical motivation, too.

His screeds have been posted unironically on free republic.
He pulled a gun in a federal reserve office in 81.
and various other things that point to my thesis that he is a right wing psychopath that lost his shit over Obama winning the election.
THe fact that a fox affiliate says that he had a list showing a 'FOX news location' leaves me non-plussed. What the hell is a 'FOX news location' anyway? Are we talking studio, local affiliate, or Shepard Smith's gym?
So if my count is right, they got a 3-4 out of 5, depending on which corporation is 1
Like I said, publicly hanging someone who finds an illegal operation is not the best way to preserve that operation. You'd might as well put up flyers saying PLEASE SEARCH EVERY SQUARE INCH OF THIS AREA for fifteen miles around.
1) No
2) No, in the sense it's one they're pushing outside of Maddow (who covered it!) and Olbermann (who will tonight, I'm sure)
3) Yes
4) Not really
5) No
Thus: it gets put on the website.
[ed] Aaaaand Rust beats me by a mile.
That's a good point. The more I think about it, the more I think this might just be an insane person.
2)A lot of news media has been doing the whole "look at these crazy teabaggers/ 9/12 movement thing", so I count that as a Yes; I just saw on Chris Matthews them talking about protests being "racially motivated", so from where I stand it's still a talking point
3) Yes
4) I thought there was video of the hanging dead man
5) No
Parks are particularly prone to have these people on them because any drugs found there can't be tied to any specific person's property.
PSN : Bolthorn
And people wonder why I want to immigrate to Canada. :?
Face Twit Rav Gram
killing a federal employee is pretty high on the list of drawing attention. Especially with the media attention the FBI's gonna be all up in their shit now.
Emigrate
