If we get a dog now not much has changed but it needs to be a med-large dog with a relatively easy energy level. Low-maintenance, friendly, can get on with other pets (cat), and does not like mean people breaking in.
Also, it should entertain me. I will be bored out of my mind with nothing but the cat.
You need a pound puppy obvs.
I wouldn't mind a golden retriever mix. Smart, fun, likes to go out but don't need to take them on multiple walks per day, not a whole lot of grooming (beyond DIY at home), likes other animals, loyal, and friendly. Also, perfect size.
golden retrievers are basically the quintessential family pet
problem is they're getting fucked up by unsavory breeding practices
That's why I want a mix. My dog in FL was mostly golden retriever with, they think, a bit of collie. YAY, pound dogs!

Unfortunately the pit bull draws the people least likely to train it properly. Combine that with its massive capacity to do harm, and you have a lot of trouble.

The vast majority of cases where you see a pitbull mauling someone, it is one of these bully mastiff crosses.
To take a powerful strong and determined dog that is bred to never let go and keep on doing whatever it takes on until its finished and then breed it to a dog with low bite inhibition towards humans creates a dangerous and unsound animal.
So would I like to see these dogs euthed and removed from existence? Yes - is is not the dogs fault that it is poorly bred and has temperament issues, but it is causing a wonderful breed to face extinction. Pits never belonged crossed out with a dog that has low tolerance for getting agitated and biting people. They are one of the major problems with the pitbull image and breed today.
Plus a pit bull heart cannot handle all that muscle. These things die very young.

If say someone hopped over our fence that it didn't know our recognize he would bark at them but other than that he was well behaved for 14 years. He snipped at my dad once when he took a toy he was chewing on away from him as a puppy but that's the only incident that ever occurred.
They are protective dogs I will give you that but violent. . .well I don't buy that completely. Mine for example was very protective of me personally. Almost in a weird paternal sort of way. He slept outside of my door. etc.
