So I just got a zune pass and want to take full advantage of it by downloading as much as I can on this doohickey. The problem is, I am having a dang brainfart here.
I already have a lot of the staples that I already owned and filled out my collections for Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, and such but dang there is so much I want and cannot think of anything more.
So any band recommendations would be neat, just to get my dang mind jump started again.
I'll get shit for it, but 3 Inches of Blood - Advance and Vanquish is an awesome album, sort of like Priest's Painkiller with screams. If you hate the screams their new album Here Waits Thy Doom only has one singer as their screamer left the band
You haven't considered it, but the whole stoner metal genre is basically based on the darker, slower Sabbath stuff.
Kyuss (Blues for the Red Sun, Welcome to Sky Valley, ...And the Circus Leaves Town), The Atomic Bitchwax (I, II, Spit Blood), Electric Wizard (Dopethrone), Fu Manchu (The Action is Go), in that order. Groovy, bluesy riffs, thundering bass, spacey solos. Good fucking times.
Pheezer on

Dethklok - Both Dethalbums are good and available on Itunes
Austrian Death Machine - Heavy Metal set to Schwarzenager quotes. Total Brutal is a really good album and Double Brutal has a couple really great tracks as well.
Yeah, a lot of people aren't. That's why I include the disclaimer, heh.
Check out Panopticon by Isis and just about any album by Opeth if you are into slower stuff that's still intense and destructive. Opeth had one album that I didn't like at all, but now I can't remember which one it was.

Morningrise maybe? That's probably their only cd I wasn't blown away by. You can't go wrong with Still Life, My Arms Your Hearse, Blackwater Park, Deliverance or Ghost Reveries.

I'll second Panopticon and add Oceanic and In the Absence of Truth, which are all by Isis. If you like that, you could check out Cult of Luna, Pelican, Red Sparowes, Russian Circles, etc...
And Om (The bassist/vocalist and drummer of sleep) which is more...trance stoner-y I guess. Never actually though about how best to describe them. Very slow, heavy, pounding:
By far my favorite band. Love Amon Amarth. Have yet to see them live, though my best friend did, and even got to Shake Johan's hand. The lucky bastard even met and got to hang out with In Flames -
I've started going to concerts with him for this reason
Posts
the fact this exists makes me so happy
I guess this thread can be locked
although there's probably a fair bit of crossover
kpop appreciation station i also like to tweet some
YEAAAAH
And how about SYL? SYL's a modern band, but they're fantastic. Devvy stopped taking his meds to record this:
Strapping Young Lad!
Also, try Budgie. They're from Wales!
Awesome
And Mountain!
My neighbors despise me right now.
Looks like they're both in the traditional metal wiki, and therefore have been suggested already, but still.

Maybe some Tyr?

Testament is always awesome to listen to

Megadeth - the new album, Endgame, is actually really good as long as you can ignore the many bad lyrical choices.
http://www.youtube.com/v/6AZRMZl8Ug8&hl=en
Flotsam and Jetsam's earlier stuff
Armored Saint
Accept - they're likely on the traditional metal listing above
Diamond Head
Mercyful Fate
King Diamond
Prong
Lamb of God for some more modern metal

I own like 90% of it
Also dang dudes you gave me some bands I overlooked
Like Overkill, Armored Saint, and Budgie
Also 3 Inches of Blood is great
And I have all of both Ozzy and Dio Sabbath
Gotta get me some Ray Gillen Sabbath because Ray Gillen is awesome

I have seen them live
Also are bands like Yob considered stoner metal
Because I hate Yob

One of the best metal albums of 2008, and I still listen to it regularly. Meshuggah is great if you like stuff that's hard to tap your toes to.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyYnstGB3rM
Both of their albums are fucking awesome.
First two albums are outstanding, later stuff, not so much.
Probably my favourite song by these guys.
I agree with everything Doc has said right here.
In addition, we do have a metal thread in D&D, which would be a great place to get recommendations.
Basically I was looking for a few suggestions to get my brain working again
I know too many bands and now I can download them all and it just fried me completely
I got my bearings now, though
Also Lita Ford's New album is pretty dang decent

I wasn't thrilled about Meshuggah went I first heard them either but they definitely grew on me. Obzen is fantastic

Warning: I almost never pay any attention whatsoever to the lyrics. Example: I have no idea what is being said in the above song. But I like it.
do you guys know what be considered essential albums/songs by The Cult?
I am getting hells of into them recently
and by that I mean I keep listening to Sun King over and over again
Sleep is to me the quintessential stoner metal band, pure groovy/heavy metal
From Sleep there's also High on Fire (made by the guitarist for sleep, Matt Pike) which is a lot more aggressive:
And Om (The bassist/vocalist and drummer of sleep) which is more...trance stoner-y I guess. Never actually though about how best to describe them. Very slow, heavy, pounding:
She Sells Sanctuary. But you probably already know that. I only have Pure Cult, which is a best of. As for essential albums, um... let me look.
I think all you really really need is Love, Electric, and Sonic Temple.
EDIT: Also Mastodon has awesome music videos.
My Personal Favorite band - Amon Amarth
Melodic Death metal with lyrics centered around Vikings/Norse Mythology.
Insomnium - A very melancholy sound, and as such not as "in your face" as a lot of other death metal
In Flames - One of the original Gothenburg bands credited for creating Melodic Death metal.
For some Folk Metal -
Turisas - A Folk/Power metal band. Very energetic and fun to listen to.
Eluveitie - Celtic Folk metal. Some melodeath influence, though theyve gotten softer with their last album
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msRy4vcSX4k
Power Metal -
Kamelot - Labelled as Power/Progressive. Not much of a fan of Power Metal, but they're one of the few bands I enjoy in the genre.
