ya, i don't know about Icon really being used to unknowns. it is for marvel's creator-owned stuff. which means marvel proper doesn't get as much of a cut when selling those books. thus they are likely to only really trust Icon books with big named people they know will sell well.
or in order to cement a contract for a big name that has always wanted to do creator owned stuff.
id be interested to find out how much marvel makes off an icon book versus somewhere like image
same goes for creators
i remember millar saying something to the effect of they do all the promotion themselves and it has to come out of pocket
he panel started by revealing the full cast of Ed Brubaker's and Mike Deodato's "Secret Avengers." "It's a Secret unless you've been reading the internet for the past 48 hours," said Brevoort before revealing the lineup to be Steve Rogers, Sharon Carter, War Machine, Nova, The Beast, Moon Knight, Valkyrie, Black Widow and the Irredeemable Ant-Man. Marko Djurdjevic will provide coves and has drawn a massive Avengers image featuring the full lineup of all the teams, which will be broken up into six covers for all the Avengers titles next year.
Marvel also announced a new Invaders mini-series by Christos Gage and Alex Ross.
I liked Alex Ross' earth-x stuff in addition to Kingdom Come and Marvels but I have no desire to see him paint the Invaders or any silver age DC hero ever again
all I can think about when I think about Image is Youngblood and Shadowhawk and Deathmate Black

damnit dude i know, but their heavy hitting books
the ones that really sell, are ones that are done by those prominent people in the company. and thus that is how image is able to keep their heads above water and really become the number 3 even though they only do creator owned.
because the money for their big guns is going directly back into the company.

Let's Play Final Fantasy 'II' (Ch10 - 5/17/10)
if you look at their board of directors
that is pretty much the creators of their books right there.

oh no Alex Ross boo
uhhhhhhhhhhhhh
what?
"oh this whole story line is featuring golden age characters/setting? Gotta bring in an artistic that only works in ultra-realistic"

I'm not sure if that's a shared or popular opinion, Shoe.
Let's Play Final Fantasy 'II' (Ch10 - 5/17/10)
but fuck the new Ant-Man, ugh.
if it involves the Invaders I'm sure it was Alex Ross' idea
well ain't that too bad
to clarify this is pretty much wrong
the books by the image founders are such a tiny fraction of their output
moon knight ain't never been cool, he's just crazy Batman to the Sentry's crazy Superman
stop stealing dc characters and making them crazy
it was cool that one time in exiles when you did it with Hyperion but enough is enough and it's time for a change (I am not a nugget)
His art, anyway

board of directors isn't founders, but even still that probably isn't the best term to use, ill admit.
Founders: Erik Larsen, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri, and Jim Valentino
Partners: Robert Kirkman, Erik Larsen, Todd McFarlane, Marc Silvestri, and Jim Valentino.
All i'm saying, when someone says "image comics" do you ever really think immediately of any project that is NOT done by one of those guys?

Alex Ross' art is kind of overrated though
his war machine was tits
that was pretty enjoyable
image publishes a gazillion good indie comics
