And just how long has Jennifer Hale been doing voices for Bioware ? She plays Mazzy Fantan in BG2 and Fall-from-Grace in PLANESCAPE.
I'm reinstalling both games + expansions as we speak.
Feeling like I need a change. Any mods that people recommend?
Jeezis, she's in friggin' everything. I'm going to have to try the "play BG1 using BG2's engine" trick now.

I remember the first time I played BG, as a young lad, and making a fighter/mage.

I missed out on BG1&2 in the golden era, and trying to play them now is almost painful.
Someone makes a thread and 1000 people reinstall.
If the games ever showed up on GOG or Steam for cheap I'd totally snatch them up and at least give them a try.
I can see why. Like Fallout and X-Com is for me, it seems like it's a good game to replay every couple of years.
Many hours have been plalyed, many kobolds have ben slain.
I may play throught the whole saga again if it works on Wndows 7.
Maybe I'll try and do an actual solo playthrough one of these days. Seems like such a hassle though.

It seems like you have to run around with all your buffs on at once if you want to have a reasonable chance of survival, and it gets pretty annoying sorting them all out before each battle. Maybe after a while i'll know what to use for each situation, but there's so much complexity to the battles it can be confusing. I'll often find half my party fleeing or inactive due to fear/paralysis/confusion/blind etc.
I haven't installed the Baldurdash fix yet, I assume I just install the ToB one (plus text pack), and that fixes SoA too. Right?
One major annoyance with the game so far - Jaheira died in the starting dungeon, then I tried out the re-organise party function and removed her, and now it seems she's lost forever. Is there anyway I can extract her rotting corpse from the dungeon and ressurect her?
Both of those fights you mentioned are incredibly hard for starting parties, should be avoided until you have more levels/spells/magic items
Baldurdash TOB fixes both versions, yes, but only if you the expansion installed, otherwise you need to find the SoA one

Good classes and combinations:
In BG1, pretty much anything with the ability to equip bows is fantastic.
Optimal party depends on a few things, including your character. Generally, the evil party (Edwin/Viconia/Korgan) is the strongest.

For 2 you've got quite a few optimal choices.
Sorcerer (any race) is a pretty effective main as long as you make sure to take the really important spells (Stoneskin, Horrid Wilting, Haste, etc).
Kensai is also very powerful provided you have a mage with Spirit Armour to keep them at a half-decent AC. Taking a human kensai and dual-classing to mage or thief is also very popular.
My own pick is actually the Blade, with which I've soloed the game before. Provided they buff themselves constantly with mirror image, stoneskin, haste and offensive spin, and dual-wield some decent weapons, they can tear through almost anything very quickly. Low HP is the only real downside.
EDit: general strategy note for anyone having problems. Learn and abuse the following spells: Chaos, Cloudkill, Web, Animate Dead (the cleric version, available at stupidly low levels), Summon Fire Elemental (Jaheira gets it very early on), Haste. Just be careful not to let summons run into a cloudkill, or they'll turn on you.
As stated, BG1 is dominated by ranged weapons, if you're good with a bow, you'll do fine. As for good NPCs, on the good/neutral side Jaheira isn't bad, Minsc is a great tank, Ajantis is good in melee as well. Dynaheir is one the best casters, Kivan and Coran are excellent ranged fighters, and Branwen does her job as a cleric
The 'tradeoff' for evil parties is that they aren't supposed to get as much xp and loot, but they have much better NPCs. Edwin is THE best mage. Korgan is THE best fighter. Viconia is THE best cleric etc. etc.
If you want a class that can do well without alot of micromanaging, the paladin's inquisitor kit is a very good class with a manageable number of useful spell-like abilities.

Exactly this. I guess it's partly nostalgia but when you actually play the games, it's just apparent that these kind of games are absolute gems.
I just found BG1 & BG2 with the tutu pack for OSX so there goes another two or six months of school, work and sun for me.
Ahh good times. Back when missile weapons were the key to beating everyone (until your main melee guy got the Boots of Speed).
While I do think BG2 is better in just about every single way, I still really enjoyed the "low magic" of BG1. Finding a +1 weapon was a big thing and finding a named magic item was cause for celebration. :P They didn't really have that in BG2 and I missed it.
Oh also, one thing I found neat and a testament to Bioware's inventiveness/humor is that if some kind of bug occurs and a certain NPC doesn't show up to give their speech or what-have-you, then they actually had a Stand In NPC show up. Heh, I forget his name, but he actually shows up in BG2 as a member of that traveling Troupe (as a stand in no less).
In BG1, a monk (using TuTu) is basically the worst class.
However, in BG2, especially in the late game and in Throne of Bhaal, monks get ridiculously overpowered. It's quite possible for monks to kill dragons in a single hit in the late game.

Kansai/Thief is just game-breakingly disgusting. Crazy attacks, dual-wield weapons, high naked armor, and then stack the best armor and weapons on top of that? One man slaughtering machine. There were a few levels where the only character I used was that one; everyone else just hung out in the back. He was the Blasto of BG2.
I wish I were playing it right now.
The load times were atrocious too. Any of the mods fix this?
Another class that makes end-game almost too easy is the ranger/archer. Nearly all of the final big-bads are spellcasters...and by that point your archer, when hasted, is going to have enough attacks per round to rip off a near machine-gun like stream of arrows. For some reason casters can't complete spells when getting arrow'd in the face constantly.
Hmm. IIRC in the configurator there was an option to set X amount of HDD space aside for loading. However, even when the game first came out I never remembered load times being long at all. On my modern day system I barely have enough time to read the loading tips. Maybe it is a problem on your end?
Also, other than a Sorcerer, Wizardslayer(15)->Thief is probably the best character in the game. It makes Kensai/Thief or Kensai/Mage classes look like tiny little children.
The game is chalked full of goodness. I also loved the old D and D system with THACO and what not.
And while I look forward to playing them again, I do not look forward to installing all my mods and Tutu again. Seriously, a major mod might have pages of options you go through one by one. One. By. One.
