i'm not arguing that mutually assured destruction is anywhere near a sane doctrine but when it comes to nuclear arms people are usually just flailin' they arms around
Man, don't you guys get tired of being totally fatalistic all the time? You've got to leave some room for unexpected things or even good things to happen. Nothing in this world is constant, even bad things.
maybe you should see my other post. things are changing, just not on a rapid or large enough scale. there needs to be a groundswell of, well, anti-neoliberalism, and that isn't happening in many places, so its not illogical to assume the worst if you extrapolate that apathy over the course of the next 30 or so years.
I dunno, I'm pretty sure it's safe to take the stance that the pace of change itself is prone to change
add to that the idea that just because something is moving along based on an existing trend doesn't mean it will continue on that way

I learned in my highschool stats class that extrapolation isn't a safe means of creating data.

hey it bothers me too.
EDIT: well Anjin id get my COLD STEEL KATANA and my GUNBLADE and save teh humens
i think that humanity knows better than to wipe itself out completely.
also it's fucking depressing how many people are going to take that statement as naive and overly optimistic.
anyways fatalism never helps!
I'm not thinking we're going to have a nuke party or anything
it's a combination of economic and political and environmental factors
most of which nobody is doing anything meaningful to prevent
bingo
I think you under-estimate humanity's ability to do a half-assed job, teefs.
We're not even fully invested in trying to kill ourselves right now, chances are we're going to do a very poor job of it.
The western culture we enjoy right now is obviously unsustainable, and some problems that everyone wrote off as being 'too far away to deal with' are finally coming to a head, but really the decline of western civilization seems much more likely to go out with a slow whimper than an apocalyptic bang.
There will be a lot of crying, bloodshed and gnashing of teeth as we slowly adapt what's left of our society to one that actually has to live with their being Limited Resources (instead of More Resources in the Next Country).
From there humanity will simply live in the shadow of what we were capable of for some generations, and then begin to adapt and advance again, more conscious of our limited resources.
the idea of presuming anything about the future based on a technology that's been around for 70 years (viz. nuclear warfare) and is, in itself, one of a great many dozen ways in which the "world could end" (using the phrase more as a general signifier than for its denotations) is pretty silly

even the craziest of nations have yet to do shit

If I could lime this any harder, I would.
yet, come on it's a goddamn nuke
their yields are bigger and everything too!
why
saying something isn't going to happen because it hasn't happened yet is fundamentally flawed
TFS you are assuming this is the only thing that changes though
if all other things are constant, then yeah, I can see how some of what you say is logical
but the assumption that other factors remain the same is a naive one
nuh uh, it's not naive because it's assuming the worst
You do that.
i don't outright say the phrase nuclear warfare won't happen
but man, the world and people's need to sustain seems don't come off as anything leading up to thermonuclear war anytime soon
well, yet okay

This is how to argue right?
where does this factoid come from?
because do we? do we really have the power to wipe out everything in the deep sea and every last lithotroph deep in the earth's crust?
hey it bothers me too.

Kinda want this to happen now
he'd like this thread
it's because they'd go all star wars kid with the shaolin spades they built in shop class and be immediately murdered
or they'd piss their pants and cry, either way
Insects ain't never gonna die out, baby
that way the whole way there you can be shooting tea party demonstrators and border patrol guards
