Huh, I always thought it would be higher then that, given how people talk about their salaries. It's not bad by any means, but it's not shockingly high.
That's where I started as a software developer. It has done up dramaticially in the last few years. It's all about experience.

Saying you're an engineer is really really unspecific. It's a catch all term and there are thousands upon thousands of possible jobs that you might actually have.
Few engineers become rich, a significant amount have a very decent salary.
Also, going into oil as an engineer is unspecific. The money you'll make depends on what you can be doing. As the Scandinavian countries push out tens of thousands of masters engineers every year, it's extremely logical to realise that very few, in fact, become rich.

starting salary for an engineer just out of college is between 50 and 60K....
senior engineers can easily get 6 figures.
