seriously RDR is otherwise a great game and I play the multiplayer regularly
but the singleplayer story can suck a dick
The story has some serious flaws, no doubt. I also didn't like the ending. It was just too nihilistic for my taste. Tragic endings ought to have at least have a purpose, in my opinion, beyond "life sucks and fuck you all".
See what a scourge is laid upon your hate / That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love
And all that.
yeah
i get enough of a "life sucks and is pointless" vibe from

Seriously I wish I could just skip everything involving the Mexican government.
Or hell, they should have made it so that you can either go see De Santa or Landon Ricketts and the rebels in general, or maybe do a mission each for both, and then decide who you're going to stick with.
Everything about the Mexico arc just made me feel dirty, and in the end of it I couldn't even bring myself to shoot Bill. That victory was like ash in my mouth.
a dude here in CH is giving me a tour of his studio next week
nice? if it's north carolina, you have to give me ten bucks if he's got BEAT KANGZ
@EM: cool! I might be sending you some songs in a few weeks. Would you be interested in writing some blog posts for them? I'll try to give you as much information about the world as possible, but I really want to get a bunch of different writing styles, because I want it to be undecided as to whether the blog is maintained in even one possible world.
yeah i could definitely do that
who are the "authors" of these blog posts again?
Well there's going to be various writers who are each investigating a section of music. For instance, once I get a few of my friends that are in the hip-hop scene up to recored, I'm going to try to workout a sort of lurid hip-hop who dunnit, and this blogger is convinced that he has uncovered the truth of the story -- a story which, frankly, nobody else even knew. Then there's going to be a poster who's just generally interested in the digital/analogue divide in music. And a blogger who just posts his favorite pop songs that week, but each post seems to come from a completely different musical universe.
but i just find Rockstar's sense of humor puerile and offputting and couldn't take it after a while
That, I think, is a very fair criticism. In fact, I think their writers really have trouble with restraint in general. I'm reminded of a mission in RDR where you are required to
Help a corrupt Mexican general burn down a town, kill all the men within it, and kidnap all the women to be raped repeatedly
And I'm like, this doesn't fit with the "redemption" thing at all. In fact, I don't want to be doing this. Why is Marston doing this? Wouldn't he draw the line somewhere?
I got mad when you couldn't intentionally aim badly to expose that con-artist West Dickens on the ranch.
The game gave no reason for Marston to actually believe him when he said he would help you and not just kill him for being a fraud.
Mexico made no sense. It might have worked if it raised questions about what Marston was willing to do to get his family back, but Marston never really expressed that much anger over how he basically felt he was forced to help a bunch of rapists.

San Andreas was far and away the best GTA. I really liked how the more you used a particular weapon the better you got with it, and just the stats system in general.
Dual wielding uzis or sawed off shotguns never got old, and taking over territory in Los Santos was great.
I wanted to like Marston so much. He talked a good game and generally seemed like a decent guy, except for those scattered missions where he didn't, because apparently the writers thought... I don't know what the fuck they thought.

I hated that I had to do all that over again at the end. Hated it. It was the point at which I stopped playing the game because taking back territory was so fucking tedious and all I really wanted to do was finish the story already.
I never quick-travelled because I liked exploring the world. It was really pretty.
That was the part of the game I liked the most. All the random scripted encounters and animals and plant life and fun stuff to see and do just riding around. It eventually got old, but for the first ten or so hours, it was great.

maybe she has an opposite magical portrait
where all of the debauchery and cruelty she avoided through good character and personal restraint shows up on her real face
and her portrait is unblemished and beautiful forever
didja ever think of that chu?

you know
life
i don't need that in my vidya
i made the mistake of watching that while i was stoned one time
sent me into a spiralling depression
it's not just the voice
it's the shuffle feel, the self-consciously whiteblue collar ethos, the trying-so-hard-not-to-be-preachy Dylan love
but I have very limited exposure to the mountain goats, so it's all to be taken with a grain of salt
@Ochu: the only music I truly enjoy is trashy pop music and high-concept classical/contemporary and jazz.
that would be okay if you did, like, other things.
but the game consisted of 80% galloping to and from various places
and 20% shooting things, or lassoing them
it was really incredibly boring
music without a chorus is kind of an interesting thing
i'm not sure i like listening to the mountain goats in general
but sometimes i kind of crave it
...
it takes a lot of attention
Nier did a fantastic job of balancing that sense of hopelessness and futility with a sense of accomplishment
hell, it's practically the theme of the credits tune

What's the quote that Troy says when he sees Jeff
hell get all of their albums you silly
Somewhere there's a painting of Organichu slowly filling with extra special episodes and flying rainbow stars.
it's very charming
the rest is better than most guywithguitar music but not terribly listenable
Hahaha
i thought you don't like dating black chicks!?
GTA SA had that terrible rockstar humor
and was also set in LA
no thank you

Jeff Winger you son of a bitch!
I thought you were dead!
what are you saying moniker
is this you declaring war
i mean, i do "dark side" playthroughs of video games where moral choices and shit result in different story and content
renegade playthroughs of Mass Effect, sith playthrough of Kotor II, etc.
but if a game basically asks me to play as an amoral bastard, i don't have a huge amount of interest in it
SR2 is sort of a weird exception because it's cartoonishly goofy
Dual wielding uzis or sawed off shotguns never got old, and taking over territory in Los Santos was great.
Portillo's?
you convinced me to pick it up someday
i guess probably when winter comes around and i am looking for a game to play because i can't go out
will i pick it up used?
who knows!?
pony i want you to play nier so badly
actually i want everyone to play it, but you especially
i want to see how you two react
i want it to be the baking soda in the papier-mache volcano of your mind
Thank you e music
Yes
also this is such a sick burn
I've got to remember this one to bust out at all the hipster cotillions this debutante season.
That way the princess is always in your castle.
actually i auto travelled all the time
the quests themselves involved galloping, and then shooting, and then galloping.
i mean the shooting was pretty decent.
but it took like half an hour to get to the next shooting part every time.
often they would force you to ride through large portions of the map during a quest.
horse riding was even less fun than urban driving.
