Gundam - A Primer:
What is Gundam, you may ask?
Only the finest work of science fiction continuity that isn't Star Trek, with just as many fans (but no spock ears necessary!)
Gundam tends toward being a Real Robot series, in that the robots are grounded in some semblance of physics (there's even minovsky particles , which are the series' relatively well-founded fictional physics) and used more as tools. There are, however, exceptions, both within the UC at certain specific points (most notably

A general summary of any given Gundam series goes like this:
Humans have colonized space, and the colonies are beginning to claim independence. People get in the crossfire, and a crew of giant robot pilots save the day. When people get killed, the survivors meditate on the nature of war. There are expections to this rule, but that's a general idea. These giant humanoid vehicles are called mobile suits, and among them is the eponymous Gundam line of mobile suits, which are always among the most powerful and generally given to the most important characters.
There's also a hobby! A constant since the show's inception, Gunpla (a portmanteau of gundam plastic) is the construction of miniaturized Gundams, ranging from the fairly cheap 1/144th scale High Grades (generally from $10 to $30, dpending on where you're buying them and which HG model it is) to the 1/60 Perfect Grades (upwards of $250, with literally perfect detailing and extensive posability, but limited selection). In between is the Master Grade (1/100th scale, with very good detail and varying degrees of challenge). There are also other grades but those don't really matter. More on the hobby below.
Universal Century - The main Gundam timeline. Much like how all Star Trek series are in the same timeline and occasionally connect, the Universal Century is a timeline spanning several series and hundreds of characters.

Alternate Universes:
After some certain point in the production line-up, the Gundam guys at Sunrise wanted to shift things around, so they decided to make the first alternate universe Gundam series (note that these universes are referred to as timelines). Alternate universes tend to have large differences between both themselves and the UC timeline, including different mook mobile suits, a greater abundance of actual Gundam mobile suits (which are rather rare in UC), and different histories of colonization and conflicts. Some alt timelines will have even greater differences.

Nice to see this thread. Anyone see the the 00 Gundam movie that just came out? It looked pretty, but that plot was silly even for a Gundam series.
Also, a while back I saw Unicorn and I was impressed. I went into it expecting crap, but it was a joy to watch. I have to look up what the release schedule is for that.
edit: Dammit, guys. I've barely been in here and the G Gundam music is in my head now. Specifically, the music that comes on when Domon puts on human condom of a fighting suit.
It's one of the few Gundam series made by the original creator that isn't massively depressing (he started taking medication). And it has a weird, interesting plot that kinda-sorta ties together every other timeline.
A shame it was never localized.

i tried watching this recently. i think i made it about 20 or so eps in before giving up? i can't stand 90s anime women anymore. it's like creators collectively decided to go out of their way to make all of them shrill and over emotional

And while we're talking about new Gundam stuff I just want to say that the Gundam 00 movie was poop. From a butt.
Edit: I'd be down for helping out with the OP later on if anything in particular is needed. Don't really have time at the moment but I will say that Crunchyroll has legal streams of the original Gundam, Zeta Gundam, Gundam Wing, and Gundam 00 so that should probably be mentioned.
Watch it again with this in mind and you'll know I'm telling the truth.
A lot of the designs were done by Syd Mead, who also worked on Blade Runner, Aliens and Tron.
Personally i liked the Stargazer mini-story the best.
In other words like every other Gundam show.

I would say watch 00 Gundam, but that would distance you further. Watch the latest entitled, Gundam Unicorn. It's pretty badass.
But nothing I heard about Destiny gave me much reason to go seeking it out.
Are Master Grades now even more 1/100 scale Perfect Grades?

00 Gundam wasn't bad, but the mobile suit designs were terrible. Mostly I just pretended it was Japan's take on BattleTech and I was happy with it.
My personal fave after G Gundam is Mobile Suit Gundam, though.
Yeah, Master Grades are still good and they just came out with the Real Grade which is a 144th scale Master.

Short of that you could probably pick them up super cheap off Amazon during a sale or Rightstuf.
And yeah, that 00 movie was just terrible. It looked amazing but the plot was terrible and the Celestial Being suits were horrendous. Which is a shame, because the first season was great.
I really liked the first season of 00, that was actually on youtube. I just have a craving for different gundams.
