This situation with my girlfriend's mother is getting ridiculous. First, she kicks her rent paying daughter out of the house with no warning (illegal), then she bars her from seeing her sick grandmother in the hospital (illegal), then she withholds my girlfriend's mail (illegal) and yesterday I find out that she showed up at my girlfriend's work to publicly harass her (you guessed it, illegal). I hate this woman so much but my girlfriend won't go to the police about it.

You may have grounds to push harassment charges on her if you're in a semi-serious relationship and it's impeding it. You should talk to a lawyer and see what they would say about it. All that shit is crazy enough to warrant it, especially if you might happen to have mail addressed to you both.

yes Wmain we all like Coheed & Cambria (this was not a suggestion, I would not recommend arguing this point with me, mortals)

Yeah it is. It really is. She's cried a whole bunch over it. There's more to it too. It's tough to explain but in using the grandmother situation, her mother has somehow managed to convince her extended family (aunts, uncles, cousins) to hate her as well, save for one cousin and her older brother. Everyone else is kowtowing to her mother and hating my girlfriend now too.
And on top of all that, before she was kicked out, her mother would verbally berate her in front of her 9 year old brother. Who now also verbally berates my girlfriend in a similar fashion whenever she calls the house looking for mail or asking for an update on the grandmother. Turns out her brother is also lashing out at school and threatening kids with weapons there too.
The irony of this? I would take the stairs in the first scenario to avoid the crowd of the escalator. Whereas after they made it "fun", I'd avoid the stairs like the plague.
