When I started watching Spartacus I thought it was cheesy as hell. Then a few episodes in it turns into the most entertaining thing on television. I was totally sold when I saw a gladiator going for an armbar on some guy as well
It's not all that unbelievable. Pankration had been a sport/martial art for 500+ years before Spartacus was around. I'm sure people were throwing armbars and chokes around long before there was a slave rebellion. :P

For sure. It would be neat to know what techniques they actually used. It would be a mistake to model it after modern MMA, but I'm sure there would be a lot of similarities. There are some pieces of pottery with wrestling moves from that era on it, and they are very recognizable today.

I just finished watching A-Team, and now I know why Rampage came back to the UFC.
I couldn't finish it. It was directed by a guy with a 10 second attention span.
It was pretty good for a stupid action flick. I just posted in the film thread, but some of the supporting cast was excellent.
Not Rampage though. Hoooooly hell.
Also, that video was good but it would have been great with less Jon Jones. :v:
I was actually expecting the A-Team to be a whole lot worse than what it turned out to be. At least they used Rampage tastefully, instead of featuring him in a long drawn out fight scene where he uses various "mma moves", ending with him getting caught in a triangle choke and having to powerbomb his way out. Thats the kind of thing I was expecting them to put into the movie, thinking it to be fan service for mma fans, when really its just dumb and cheesy.
At least he didn't bring the entire movie to a grinding halt to give a soliloquy on cauliflower ears.

Hahaha, yeah that was pretty bad. I still liked it way more than A-Team though.
uh oh
golden glory is coming to UFC
no
not reem
this jon olav einemo guy who is apparantly an ADCC champ
and he gets to fight shane carwin for his first UFC fight, talk about a huge push for a UFC rookie
more heavyweights especially golden glory ones are always exciting though
not really sure what this fight is supposed to be though
i mean you could view it as setting up a can for carwin to get back on track
but an ADCC champ?
really? if brock could choke his ass out, this guy will wreck carwin's shit on the ground especially since he'll be training by trying to take down reem while eating uber knees and uber punches
thats why i would say this is more of a really fast push for a golden glory fighter than a can for carwin to take down in which case frank mir should be absolutely livid right about now
this should be his fight

Grappler vs. Strike?
Seems like a good matchup. Maybe Carwin has been doing some conditioning between nasty tweets and will stand a chance this time.
He hasn't fought since 2006 and is getting thrown in against Carwin to debut? That's ridiculous. If they need a striker/grappler contract, give him Kongo or Schaub or something. I'll be shocked if Olav lasts 90 seconds.
I don't remember SF making Roger Gracie debut against a top 5 guy.
Unless the guy has great takedowns Carwin is gonna wreck him. Most of the BJJ specialists in the UFC have terrible takedown capabilties.

In Jorge Gurgel's defence, his knees are completely shot and I have to imagine that fucks up his ability to wrestle. It was obvious to me that he had the mentality that win or lose, he was going to be exciting to the dumb fan who just wants guys to swing their arms a lot (aka the majority of fans) and get paychecks.

Brock only subbed Carwin because Carwin gassed. Carwin only gassed because Brock is physically un-KO-able (though he seems to have a glass chin mentally). Unless Olav is also, he won't survive Carwin's onslaught like Brock did to the point where Carwin would punch himself out.
Carwin didn't punch himself out against Mir, for example.

Ahaha, I didn't realize he was an ADCC champion from 2005.

for any other fighter maybe, but how many golden glory fighters are there that can't take a punch
it's pretty much all they train there
hell Bas recommended brock go there and learn to get hit in the face all day by reem
I'd be surprised if carwin KOs him easily
I saw Urijah Faber on TV earlier today, getting interviewed on a morning show. I was thinking that this was a good opportunity to expose more folks to the intricacies of the world of MMA.
So the reporter and Faber talks about their favorite Ke$ha songs and how the wedgie is banned in MMA, while the reporter tries to punch, kick, and eye poke Faber. They eventually "spar" where Faber takes the reporter down and submits him via yoga noogie.
At least Faber is looking good soon after his last fight.

That is some wonderful in depth reporting right there :rotate: I am also glad that Faber looks good after his fight. No need for Faber to look like this again:
That fight was sloppy, sure. But both guys were giving it their all and trying to win. That's cool.
I can also enjoy slower-paced fights where both guys display tremendous technique. In fact I probably prefer those fights.
Then you get a fight like Pettis/Henderson which has both and the world is a beautiful place.
Then you get a fight like Sanchez/Kampmann where one fighter fights sloppy but gives it his all and the other is slower-paced but showcases trememndous technique, where the technique fighter demolishes the sloppy fighter's face and still loses via UFC decision and the world becomes a little more dreary.

Someone on the production or writing crew of Spartacus likes them some MMA.
There are several fights throughout the series that break down to jits. At various points there have been RNCs, triangles, and arm bars.
Always fun to see it pop up in random places.
As long as it's done well. Sometimes it just looks completely out of place. :?

interesting
EDIT: Apparently his ADCC win was in 2003 and his last fight was in 2006 (according to wikipedia)
and 35 years old... I'm thinking this guy isn't going to make any waves

Jung should have taken the win.
We know. But Leonard can't lose to Asians, as we've recently learned.
okay i have never seen that fight before
apparently i lived in a hole for a while.
but wait.
how could anyone not enjoy that fight. the second round just ended and i am all smiles
Big surprise, right? 8-)
why would
how could a judge.
oh i get it.
1 submission attempt is equal to about 23 ground strikes.
MMAth is a beautiful thing.
About half this thread is too cool for the Jung/Garcia school
Yeah that's pretty much what we were thinking at the time, it kind of started the "the judges hate asian fighters" theme we have going.
Then we had a debate where some people loved the fight (read: me) and lots of others hated it (tum tum)
