Most modern electronics have transformers that can handle different input voltages and frequencies. It's often written on a sticker on the transformer. For those, adaptors are just because power points are different shapes.
For stuff without transformers, there will be a noticeable difference. Like if you have a light that takes incandescent bulbs that plugs into a power point with no transformer, it will be twice as bright in Australia than in America.

my edit was lost so I'll sum it up simply:
if you are device-agnostic then certain standards are more efficient/more powerful and fuzzbutt is right
if you are talking about a specific device then it is very likely that you won't see any difference whatsoever

Well, that's not entirely true. If you have something cheap like a Walmart hairdryer designed for 110v and bring it to Australia, you'd better use a step-down converter, because 240v will fry it.

right, but the question was about functional differences
above the socket converter the hair dryer won't act differently in Australia than it does in the US
also it would be completely impossible to just plug an American device into an Australian socket:
Interestingly I'd never really questioned why we have seperate ones for shavers. Not until the judgmental foreign eyes were on it
Apparently,
Due to EU regulations all manufacturers must ensure that electric shavers are only supplied with a shaver cord which has a 2pin plug. This is a safety feature. It has been implemented to ensure that we do not plug our shavers directly into the 240V UK mains socket while shaving- causing possible risk of electrocution when water is involved. Most bathrooms are fitted with a 2pin shaver socket as this is the only socket which is legally safe in a bathroom.
Most Hotels in the UK and Europe will only have a shaver socket installed in the bathrooms.
I just disabled my network card on a whim, and the two things that always made the computer crash (opening UDK and closing Portal 2) worked fine.
This is good news because that is probably the cheapest thing in the computer to replace.
It might just be the drivers for the network card though. I had drivers for my network card that were causing my desktop to crash 2 out of every 3 times I turned it on. I did not have to replace the card itself, just the drivers.

because change is painful and no, there is no functional difference beyond the type of plug you need
but above the wall socket there's no functional difference
your hair dryer is not more powerful in one country than it is in another

A socket that you put your electronic shaver into. You know, for men who like to shave their face.
that's because you are on the bottom of the earth

oh come on
..second thought, you have a point
Well if someone just made a "My dad/mom/relative has a terminal illness" post I don't think it would be an appropiate place to post it.
I dunno, seems like it might still be appropriate.
All of you who have it so far, what say you
yea or nay?
I think I have most of you.
Huh, that is a new one.
