so this video's been getting pretty big, you guys should watch it, it's about this guy Joseph Kony in Africa who is generally a monster who enslaves kids and makes them kill their own parents and dudes are trying to spread awareness to get him arrested
Big enough that you should probably include a description of what it is so people will actually know what it is and watch it.

Ok before everyone turns into assholes in this thread,
yes, the organization that is running this campaign has its problems and they're not the shining white nights they're presenting themselves as, yes they may have made some missteps in the past
but awareness of the problem is only going to help. I didn't know anything about the LRA before watching the video and reading further and hopefully everyone can agree that Kony and the LRA is reprehensible.
Try not to get on your high horse and appear cool by poo-pooing an effort to save the lives of thousands of children.
no no, that is the campaign for coney island hot dog awareness

and maybe i figured multiple viewpoints on the issue could be appreciated instead of turning into an echo chamber? i'd prefer discourse. if it does turn into a hate-on for the people responsible for the video, like pipe was worrying about, that'd be just as bad.

"American Advisers" is a pretty sneaky way of saying "Tactical Forces".
The idea is neat, but Government action, and therefore Military Action, I feel, isn't exactly the best foot to put forward in this situation. You're merely fighting fire with fire, instead of just stopping one war criminal, you're enabling another: The United States Military.
The idea is novel and refreshing, yes. I just wish there was an easier, Peace-Corpsy way to do it.
I'm all for schools, education, infrastructure and what not, I just feel that the government's knee jerk reaction to us being up in arms is to just assassinate the guy.
In the long run, who loses? We do. We're enabling our own war crimes, while nay saying others. American foreign policy is a turd, and you can only polish a turd so much.

they're not calling for his assassination, though
they're calling for arrest
his arrest as a war criminal, which, you know, he is.

well, they're putting forward a comparatively small goal for people to focus on, rather than just saying 'make Africa better'
I understand the reluctance for military action to be taken, but it does seem like the goal is to capture rather than kill the guy, and the Hague seems to have taken an interest rather than just the US military
also calling the entire military a war criminal might be overblowing it a bit?

All depends on if you believe every member is culpable because they volunteered to join and are a willing cog in the infernal death machine. I don't, but I know people who do.
Infernal Death Machine is my new grindcore/jazz band by the way.
After arrest there are two options: he gets out with appeals and/or bribery in African courts, presuming there are any that will take the case, or Two: capital punishment.
The latter is just a classy assassination.

Hang the bastard.
Actually, no, strip him nude and throw him into a sound proof padded room forever. The death penalty really doesn't do anything ever especially in situations like this where the crimes are so specifically heinous. Let his imprisonment be as long and cruel as possible.
God, I wish I lived during the French Revolution, when killing Monarchs, Politicians, Radicals and Political Enemies was all for sport and entertainment.
Being a filthy member of the proletariat would have been AWESOME.

If people are wondering what the "poo-pooping"? is there is a write-up on Reddit.
Problems need awareness to be solved by the people who have the resources to do so. But the people managing those resources need to be able to hold themselves to be accountable to how they manage those resources otherwise they lose public trust.
Personally though I don't trust any of these overseas charity drives until I see america fix this:
These places exist IN AMERICA, they're completely legal, and they're only growing. It's the new solution for parents who have kids that don't conform blindly to their religious and political views, let me explain:
There are some real similarities to both these sorts of child abuse. Granted I don't think these kids in america are getting butchered or killed or forced to carry guns. But the psychological abuse towards gays and atheists because they are not the status quo is wrong. Just by changing the laws in american the above racket could be shut down. No army. No bloodshed. Just change the Law.
The problem with injustice in the world is that people don't want to think about the problem closer to home. It's easy to paint a picture of a bad guy a long way away and drum up support to fix it. It's much harder to build support for problem which are more complicated and closer to home. This isn't the fault of the film makers. But in 2010 onwards there seems to be a common theme of solving problems far away with money instead of finding solutions to the same sorts of problems back at home. And that's a little worrying.
Edit: On a side note: http://visiblechildren.tumblr.com/ Has been blocked on facebook. Another site of from someone concerned about this whole thing.
Military intervention may or may not be the right idea, but people supporting KONY 2012 probably don’t realize they’re supporting the Ugandan military who are themselves raping and looting away. If people know this and still support Invisible Children because they feel it’s the best solution based on their knowledge and research, I have no issue with that. But I don’t think most people are in that position, and that’s a problem.

Man not every armed response is a war crime. I'm sure your college Lit professor told you otherwise but it's just not true.
Dude should be arrested as assassination has not worked well ever historically but assuming going that route is a war crime is absurd.
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.

Uhm, after arrest he'll be tried by the International Court of Justice in the Hague. Good luck buying them off.

I don't see how, ICJ is for state vs state cases.
As much as I applaud the initiative here, having lived on the continent for most of my life I wonder what will happen after, because if history is anything to go by it just paves the way for someone else to come in and fill the spot committing the same atrocities or worse, being 'elected' to run the country in which these things happen. Does anyone expect the US and Europe to police this indefinitely?

Right, how crazy is it to actually send in a team to extract him so he can be tried at the Hague?
I'm talking some UN sanctioned Tom Clancy wet dream Rainbow 6 rip off. I mean Jesus, there isn't any moral "greyness" here. He is a terrible person that should be tried in a court for his crimes against humanity.

WWASPs are fucking horrible and Robert Lichfield deserves a savage beating, but they are being shut down. The way the organization is designed makes it difficult to kill, but there's definitely progress being made
According to wikipedia, it is out of business but not fully dissolved because of ongoing litigation. The academies that are still operating no longer maintain ties to it.
It makes me angry that parents don't follow up on this shit better before sending their children there. Especially places OUTSIDE THE FUCKING COUNTRY like Tranquility Bay.

so, to clarify, when we say 'call for his arrest', we are suggesting that the american military should go to uganda and arrest this man?
it seems like the implication there is that's something america can just snap its fingers and get done at no cost to anybody
i haven't watched this video, but he should be indicted by the ICC. once that happens, it's up to individual states in which he hides to extradite him. the US doesn't tend to be that fond of working with the ICC, so it will probably have nothing to do with the matter.

I think the most important thing to know here is to do you're own research before you donate money to anything. Don't just trust that X person says it's the best/worst thing ever.

1) why should the world care
2) what should the world do
the world, mind, not America. The world's policeman isn't, and strike team justice can't and shouldn't be dispensed
you mean the international criminal court
