Hey a friend of mine is starting photography and was wondering about editing photos.
like how necessary it is and is afraid her photos are going to "look edited" if she starts messing with sliders and stuff in lightroom. Before she was just using aperture and hitting the "Edit this" button.
Do you have a link to some nice beginner information?
(I.. do use auto tune a lot in lightroom to get close to a good setting, and then adjust further from there if necessary)

Artreus, not sure if this was already mentioned or not, but Google's Picasa has an editor built in which is pretty clean, gives you access to the basics, and automatically saves a backup of any photo you start to edit. It's what I end up using for just about all of my edits and I haven't found myself in many situations where I need something beefier.

So I found a Canon T3i for sell with two lenses and a bag for sell new in the box in Tulsa for $500. I bought it as my backup camera for when I am chasing. I took it out during the tornado outbreak yesterday and destroyed it when I totaled my Jeep hitting a deer while on a 1/4mile wide tornado in south central Kansas around midnight.

pics or it didn't happen
Glad you are not dead, deer are serious business (also tornados I guess)
My friend had a broken foot and acquired a cane + top-hate to gimp around on. Impromptu photo that turned out pretty decent. It almost looks like I ran a train on some HDR, but all I did was pull the curve + contrast a bit and make it B+W

Here is my Jeep. Another chaser took a photo of it when they found it later that night. I wasn't there.

This is the second Jeep that I have killed by driving it into a deer on the highway when chasing in two years.
Here is a pic of the last one (spoilered due to blood):
The above image may not look bad, but the buck went under the car and ruined the radiator as well as several of the suspension components.

You have car insurance right? You can almost certainly claim the camera as contents damaged in the crash.
It didn't resize it to begin with, actually! I put it in the spoiler because imgur rehost :effort:

It would have. You just have to either clear your cache or refresh or something. I think it is just refresh. You just can't see it when you first post it
I was only a butt about it because I have been away from my computer and phone posting and could not see the picture when it was in the spoiler
I like the shot, but I'm not sure why you think it looks HDR'd. It looks perfectly fine to me (in terms of avoiding the HDR effect, anyways. Like I said, I like the shot regardless of tonal comments).

Sheri, I'm definitely enjoying your shots. What's your lighting set up like for a lot of these? Most of your shots have some really great natural feel to them, but they look a little too polished for straight ambient. Although I guess you could be just using the shade and a fat aperture...

Also I've never used lightroom or aperture so I don't know their capabilities.
Need some stuff designed or printed? I can help with that.
I basically just told her to keep practicing until it looks right but not to go too crazy with the contrast and what have you
You want to adjust exposure and curves and blackness and fill light and try not to use contrast and brightness. They're kind of ham handed.
Pay close attention to the histogram. Try to make sure you don't get any peaks at either end.
Raw is great for changing white balance in post as well as detailed colour balance.
but yeah you're right, the best way to avoid the "over processed" look she's talking about is just use small moves. Don't force anything.

I've always found messing with brightness produces weird results I do not like so I do not touch that either.

Here's my light set-up:
Sometimes I use a reflector!
But the ones of @Smart Hero and @Stareosarus a few posts ago are actually sans reflector.

And one of my favorite models/runners up posted for Orlando photographers/models/MUA/designers to send their work
So I was like "hey I am one of those things" and sent my site
And she's like "your photos are so pretty" and then agreed that we should shoot because she's moving down here
OH MY GOD YOU GUYS
