We don't know anything credible except for what was in the big leak. That had five empty slots, at least one of which is sure to be taken by Miis, but we don't know for sure if there are even any more characters than that.

I was confused about why the demo was such a big deal, it has been out at Japanese stores since last Saturday. I didn't realize it was an eShop demo. I guess the explains why some characters in that screenshot are highlighted.
I'm amazed how good the game looks with how low-poly the models look. I'm pretty sure that Link's belts are actually textured on (except for the top part of the knot), but it's hard to tell them apart from a full model.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

Smashboards is saying that Gamexplain said the demo will hit NA on September 19th. That might be some of the embargoed PAX info. Not sure how true any of that is.
I know this is crazy, but seeing Mega Man as one of the handful of characters playable in the demo makes me hope Nintendo is sitting on a "we bought the rights to Mega Man" announcement.
Pic of the day. Users in Japan, you can now download the demo for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS! You can pick among 5 fighters with which to play. The stage is Battlefield, and the rules are fixed. There will be a few items and assist trophies available too. You can battle via local wireless, so have fun battling with your friends. For users outside of Japan, stay tuned for more news about the demo for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. Screen shot is from Japanese version.
Ooh, that sounds promising.
The only mode available on the demo version is Smash, but I also left open a feature called Tips. Just remember to tap that button. You'll figure the rest out once you do.
Ha. They're testing Villager's item-grabbing special on the VGBootCamp stream and it works on damn near EVERYTHING. Falling trees, droplets of water from the watering can, slingshots, Megaman fists, Pikachu's thunder...you can even kidnap Rush. It also has double power, so a stolen fully-charged Megaman forward-smash easily kills at 30%.
Nice that Mega Man is part of the demo. I'm really looking forward to playing as him, however I've heard that he takes some getting used to, so this should give me ample opportunity to practice with him.
Bit later than I would've hoped for, but oh well. Guess I'm staying up till 3 in the morning.
Also also: This time, Shulk's "Challenger Approaching" banner really is gone, so we're getting a new character soon (not really a surprise since the game releases this week, but still).
Ahaha. I didn't think there was a better way to disappoint than "here's some menus", but "here's some menus for a demo you don't have, tantalizingly translated into your language" takes the prize.
Wavebouncing is still in the game.
RARing is still in the game.
Ledge cancelling is still in the game.
Pivot cancelling is still in the game.
QA cancelling is still in the game.
Jablock is still in the game.
Dashdancing is still in the game.

There's gonna be a whole other row that scrunches everything up, and then that very bottom row has a couple more things in it?
Gotta be, not enough room there. Unless it scrolls?

Looks like the only stage is Battlefield and Battlefield's final destination version.
But no Fox... dammit.

Ooh, that sounds promising.
How does that work exactly? I can think of several ways to do it, at least one of which would make Fox basically hard counter Villager.
Also, this:
