DA2 takes place over ten years and then Varric telling the story to Cassandra happens a couple years later, I think. It's at least long enough for him to write the book and the Seekers to find out he was there for the whole thing. DAI starts a few weeks or months after that.
Bhelen brings very much needed change, despite being a completely horrible person, and allows casteless to help fight darkspawn.
He's got the sense to understand that, when your people are gradually losing ground to the darkspawn, it's pretty suicidal to keep the right to fight them a privilege only the elite can have.
He also furthers surface trade, I believe, which is also good.
Harrowmont seals off the city and basically dooms his people to (Probably) be eaten by Darkspawn. What an asshat.

Playing more multiplayer than I thought. It's actually distracting me from the singleplayer!! It's also making me think dangerous thoughts about restarting the story as a different class... but no, that way lies madness.

It really is sad how royally fucked over the Dwarves are due to humanity and the magisters.
Dwarves used to have this whole underground civilization, and now it's just two cities at the far ends of the world, and a giant nest of darkspawn in between them.
Because I was fighting him as a rogue and basically spent like five minutes just constantly having to play hit and run and eventually his occasional taps wore through all my potions and I just reloaded and went FUCK YOU ALL and murdered everyone.
While I like Merrill, that is in spite of being pretty awful in ways.
Also it's really bullshit that they don't actually give the other characters specializations, which means if you don't play a mage you are required to have Anders for healing.
After a playthrough about a year ago I swore I'd roll mage hawke next time just so I could get by without having to drag Anders everywehre with me.

Never really played a warrior in DA2.
I just like how they look the most, and you can always play as a rogue or mage by using one of your party members
