The problem with anime threads, IIRC, is not the existing forumers talking about anime
it's the people who then come from elsewhere online to talk about anime
and historically some of those people have brought some creepy attitudes with them which is uncool
I've flipped through about six pages of people discussing various graphic depictions porn in a Presidential election thread. Yes, SE is the wild west, but still.
I'm not going to go against the will of our glorious leaders, long may they reign. But to me it's kind of baffling.

Trump was awful and Hillary was brutal (the billionare jibe in particular)
A few people mentioned Trump's Millania joke was funny, which it was but. A) So many people made that joke when it came out. I hope he actually told his wife he was making that joke because trashing your wife because your presidential campaign required her to make a speak which they consequently fucked up is a pretty cheap move for laughs.

IoT is super interesting when you think of the ways it can apply to industry
like having self-driving farm machinery operate using predictive analytics from a cloud to determine where to place more pesticide or water, so that the farmer becomes a completely useless role except to hit an on button for the machinery to operate each day (or night)
or using self-driving 18-wheelers that can load and unload on their own from distribution centers
or ordering goods from the grocery store (now the warehouse) that is delivered via drone
like there are some super seriously interesting ways that the IoT and machine learning will affect socioeconomics
just, maybe, make it more secure, a wee bit more?

Isn't effective security for things connected to the internet, to a certain extent, basically impossible? I'm pretty sure I've heard that said before
Also on a side note, how come all the porn talk in this thread happens when I'm not around.

I like the current method of handling anime where we look at each others avatars and judge each other in silence.
A magician gives you a ring that, when worn, will let you see the world as it truly is.
However, the ring will never leave your finger, and you will be unable to ever describe to another living person what you see.

When enough appliances/equipment implement predictive analytics, eventually at one point they will figure out that humans have become a completely useless role

The thing is, people aren't going to try super duper hard to break into your livingroom security camera or your fucking smart fridge, you're nobody and they don't care
It's just the fact that they're totally unsecured means people can effectively find these unsecured devices en masse
I waited 4+ hours in the last federal election as they limited the number of booths/machines to just 3 per area
They would not let you go if you got to vote as there was a line just to turn in your ballot.
The county got into a lot of trouble with the federal voting commission over that so they have a had telling you we will be ready this time and encouraging you to vote early {and often!}
I have but it was fresh off the presses in Iraq
And when I worked a certain job I thought the $20 looked wrong os I tested with the dollar test pen. It came up as black as I did the swipe with the pen the customer pulled a knife and slashed at me so I have a weird scar on my left arm when I raised it.

...now I REALLY want to see if I can early-vote or write in my vote, or take that day off work. I do NOT want to get off work at 4 or 5 on that day, and find that there actually isn't enough time to vote.

None of that stuff needs to connect directly to the internet. They can just as easily have them all connect to a single secured private computer or server in the customer's hands, but that requires a modicum of infrastructure and doesn't fit the immediate fantasy of always being able to see the inside of your fridge or be able to check on your baby cam while you're across town.
Ideally if you're going to network all your appliances the entire infrastructure would be set up through a LAN, with only the secured PC's connected to the internet and controlling any traffic while also storing the data in an encrypted cloud database. As it is, IoT objects are usually pushed out with minimal or absolutely no actual encryption, and the discussion on whether it's even possible to secure it is rendered moot by the fact that they're unsecured by default.
