shrugs with 100 lb dumbbells are nothing to sneeze at. the important question is how high do you go?
'cause i can shrug 405 10 times a little bit, but i fail at 10 with 185 if i go all the way to my ears each rep.
I do have a question about the form.
If I stick my head out a bit, does it work the traps more?
Also, when I do barbell shrugs, I use an alternative grip (one palm in, other palm out). Does this matter at all?
The reason why I do it like that is because it helps with my grip.
You can go super wrong with upright rows given that they're extremely bad for you and you're basically guaranteed to fuck up your shoulder.
what makes you say this?
If you search my posts for upright row I've been through it before. They're terrible for you. Even Necro doesn't do them, and he's a beast. T-Nation advises against them, and those guys don't even admit steroids are bad for you.
How heavy do you have to go before it becomes a problem? I think that I used to do upright rows (I mean, it's a "row" motion and I'm standing upright), and it never caused a problem.
EDIT: Oh, wait, no. GIS/Wikipedia disagrees with me. Yeah, uh...
What part of that looks like a good load-bearing position for the shoulder? Jesus, that doesn't even look healthy.
This is the row that I used to do:
Except that he's leaning waaaay forward. I did this standing in front of a wall. This is the one I currently use:
You can throw a pushup in there for fun if you want.
Yay, now I have a reason for taking upright rows out of my routine! I always hated that exercise.
Maybe I'll do military presses instead. Or something.
Military presses are not a substitute for rows. Try doing renegade rows (the one that looks like a pushup) instead. You can do it with dumbbells, as long as the dumbbells have flat bottoms so they can be placed on the floor.
Upright rows are terrible. I cringe whenever I see someone do them at the gym.
My shoulders would always hurt during the exercise and my joints would make the most awful of sounds.
Upright rows are second only to curls and MAYBE the bench as the most popular exercise at my gym. Bent over rows are good but I'm pretty sure I'm doing them wrong in some way because I find them hugely uncomfortable.
I think duck stance deadlifts involve the feet turned out. Which seems like regular deadlifts. Ow. Ow. Ow. Still, after this no deadlifts until monday.

Military presses are a substitution for upright rows because upright rows and military presses both work the upper traps. I don't know why you'd do upright rows instead of a military press because the press is a much better exercise. You should still do some other kind of rows to work your lower traps and general back though.

I'm not really focusing on them, it's just that I thought it was a heavy weight...but I guess not
Funny thing, I kept on repeating some of Ronnie's lines and a couple of guys looked at me weirdly.

I agree with this completely. I've never done any trap specific work and mine are pretty fucking strong.
those thing rock
and overhead tricep extensions.
if you don't think those don't work your traps, you are mistaken.

It was embarrassing.
Later, after I changed pants, I did some boxing and vomitted a little.
Need some stuff designed or printed? I can help with that.
