A better question then - can you give me reasonable scenario in which a significant amount of pirates would be stopped by anti-piracy measures, given how easy they are to circumvent?
I'm trying to see this from a developer's/publisher's perspective, and I can't really understand why it would make sense to pay a company like Sony DADC (Securom's developer) to provide security when there doesn't seem to be any evidence of its effectiveness, and demonstrably easy ways of turning that security off. The only reasoning I can seem to come up with is that "it's better than nothing", although even that's difficult to claim when it's also driving away legit customers.
Sure. Consoles. Putting a mod chip on a console isn't rocket surgery, but they seem to have a much lower piracy rate. It's also just sort of a common-sense thing; the more bullshit you have to go through, the more likely you are to be like "fuck it" and just buy the thing.
EDIT: Not that I'm saying we have good answers to the problem right now.
The most effective measure I've seen so far on the PC side hasn't actually been an explicit measure to stop piracy, it's simply a bandwidth cap and torrent filtering imposed by the major ISPs in this region. It's not really a reasonable solution (internet bandwidth will eventually grow to the point where caps are no longer necessary), but it does seem to have the side-effect of curbing unlimited piracy.
viv's right, though
this thread is our link to the rest of the world
and what has it brought us?
gents like yutt.
yes, you make a great argument.
i say we shut this portal like i should shut viv's mouth, and that is with HOT JIZZ!
Yutt isn't so bad. Actually he's pretty much like the rest of us when he's posting seriously, it just seems like he got on the bad side of SE when he started, and then responded in kind when the shit-flinging began.
It does kinda highlight the problems with SE's defensiveness - on the one hand it serves as a wall to keep the likes of gamefaqs.com away from here, but it's gotta suck for Gabe and Tycho when their fans want to interact with other Penny Arcade fans, but instead they stumble into SE's new comic thread when we're completely off-topic and hazing newcomers, as has been happening recently.

I honestly don't know what to do with myself now that I can't say something stupid.
I haven't found the comic funny in months. I'm considering just going through the archives, to see if I deluded myself into thinking that I enjoyed this.

Yeah this is pretty much what popped into my head when I read Knob's update from the Powers that Be.
But I mean based on what I saw at PAX, an awful lot of PA fans are the sorts of people that all chant "we are gamers hear us ROAR" and other such things, which isn't really a very "SE++/DubDub-esque" sort of attitude I don't think.
So really it's more of a "tone it down for the people who just wanna stop by and say something about the comic" thing than anything else.

Intelligence, apparently
Nobody is scoring very high yet
Randall's the only contestant, I think he's winning
good for him
I will miss his comic edits
More people need to do comic edits, they used to be the highlight of the new comic thread for me
hey, how about we keep the serious business rules in the serious business forum and make a new comic thread in D&D and in SE++.
do you think this is a good idea?
skulltula has a comic edit in this very thread
zombot posted it
Oh, that was Skull Man? I didn't realise. Good to see he's found a way to sneak his edits into the thread.
I never really thought about it, but I guess being banned means you either walk away from the forums, or become a permanent lurker, huh
you shut your fuckin mouth, or i will shut it for you.

Congratulations, I wasn't going to give you an infraction for going off topic and now I am! You sure know how to get things done!
