To be fair, the public holidays ("bank" holidays) are a quirk of my employer, usually they're rolled into four weeks paid holiday entitlement.
I've never worked anywhere that specified a certain number of sick days, though.

Ok so I'm an idiot. Is japan saying he has 20 days vacation, and 0 holidays because he has to work during the (for example) 10 holiday days, and those ten days are just added to his 20 days vacation, which basically amounts to 30 days vacation?
I get 26 days paid holiday (assuming a five day week).
Most UK companies give 20 days paid holiday. The Public holidays are a little weird in this situation, since you have to agree to work them (i.e. you can always opt to take those days as holiday, but it comes out of your entitlement if you do).

I don't really get much vacation at my current job. I am taking 6 days off in December though to check out France. I've never been off the North American continent before.
They were expecting it, since I'd outright told them that I was looking for another job.
When I told them that I was getting a ~50% raise in the process, they kind of realized that there was no way of keeping me.

Well, for the record, I recently gave my two weeks notice, they called and offered me a promotion/raise to a really good position (to keep me with the company), so I refused another job offer I had. Then they filled all three of those open positions with people outside the company.
So... there's a big conflict going on inside me about it.

Where are you working now? I ask primarily because I always get the impression that my career would have been in a similar industry to you had I not freaked out and dropped out of uni.
For perspective, a good number of the people I went to university with now work at BAE, and a couple of them work for Qinetiq.
What do they expect to do once you find another offer?
They're kinda screwed because, during the drama concerning ANOTHER position I was promised but didn't get, I was the only tech to learn alot of the shit that's going on back here.
I'm not bitter about the other position, because I was promised it off the record, and understand what happened with that one.
