i've never seen a wolf in person
i feel like that would be awesome
i did see a dog that was half wolf though
he was so pacific but god fucking jesus christ damn he was huge
he had a head markedly larger than mine and was just like chillin on the floor being like 'i could eat your whole family with the same effort you use to take a dump but i'd rather just hang out here and get pet'

I work in places where wolves have been re-introduced. They look like skinny dogs, but they got crazy eyes and twice the bite strength of a pit bull. Our elk and deer have gotten unused to predators, and the wolves will do things like run them into deep snow and then run along ripping out their throats and stomachs, hamstringing the front legs and watching the elk trip and fall - they're the only animal I've ever seen kill for the fuck of it, for fun and practice while they were full.
They'll follow pregnant elk and cows when they walk off to give birth, and hit the newborn before it hits the ground, yank it right out of the mother, bite it through the throat, and then turn on her.
Wolves are really fucked up sick individuals is what I'm saying here. And yes, I know that dudes have totally followed wolf packs around and totally petted them and stuff and all but wolves aren't that bad with people - they know that the skinny gorrilla brings the bangstick if you eat too many.
wolves aren't fucked up, it's how they evolved to survive in their niche
it's like saying a croc is a dick for eating an antelope
No
see you evolved to be an apex ominvore. You kill and eat. But when you hamstring something, watch it die, bite the nose off it and lap at it's blood while it thrashes around next to you, gleefully roll with your packmates over the nose like puppies fighting for a ball, and then run off without eating it

but their instincts drive that behavior
instincts that they evolved
just like a cat playing with a mouse
it seems like a dick thing to do, but it's just instinct to the cat
wolves can't help it anymore than a fish can help swimming

No, but see, wolves CAN help it. When they're actually hungry, they just chomp the fuckers in the neck and watch them fall over dead. They just decide to play sometimes. If it has survival value, it's probably in re-enforcing the instinct to run and not wheel and fight in their prey.
but as for them "helping" it
Rabid dogs can't help it
Sociopathic humans can't help it
Cancer cells can't help it
Virii can't help it
roaches can't help it
but congress doesn't want to dump a load of any of these things in my back yard
I'm just saying, making a value judgment about a wild animal's behavior is pretty stupid
Male lions will often eat the young sired by a previous male when they take over a pride
it's not a dick move, it's what lions do
when a female Robin brings food to its young, that's not some miracle of compassion
it's a bird following the instincts that the species has evolved to survive in their niche
any attempt to moralize about their behavior is pointless and stupid

You know what animals really are dicks? Fuckin Killer Whales

They're dicks. You don't seem to be getting what dicks they are.
No, I take your point, I do
but explain the instinctual basis for spree-killing your prey
I'm sayin'
it's the instinct to be a dick.
Also, I make value judgments about human behavior and we're not a whole lot different.

just because you don't know what the advantage of the behavior is, that doesn't mean one doesn't exist
besides, that's an overly simplified view of evolution
the behavior may be simply a result of other behaviors that help them evolved
these things don't evolve in isolation
look at humans for example
our brains evolved in a way that makes us very poor at understanding probabilities, which wasn't much of a problem 10,000 years ago but in this day and age our skewed "understanding" of probabilities hurts us much more than it helps us
man, those whales would be stupid to pass up easy snacks
But is it really necessary to drag them out into the ocean and play catch with them?
like I just said above, you can't isolate out specific behaviors as if they evolved in isolation from other traits
there may be some benefit to the behavior (hones their hunting ability, or some other benefit we can't identify but exists nonetheless), or the behavior was a consequence that came along with some other trait

Hey man
you think I'm all disrespectin' nature here
but I'm respectin' nature.
By giving it credit for being a dick on purpose and not treating it like a retard that can't help it.
You see this? This thing has brain the size of my car, it should be leading the UN, but it's still exhibiting some dick behavior. You watch from 1:45 and tell me these guys aren't dicks.

Dru, you're the one with the over simple view of evolution here

you know you do

but don't leave your pets outside because oh god
My grandmother's neighbor is a dogsledder and has his huskys chained up outside
well a pack of wolves pranced by and noticed this. They destroyed his entire team
it was a blood bath
