that said, prisons do seem to perpetuate a sad cyclical series of events leading back to eventual imprisonment once again
I don't think it's so much that prisons perpetuate that series as the treatment of released convicts.
I'm not saying that some ostracism isn't deserved, but, well, think about the guy who committed his crime, and actually learned his lesson, and is now trying to make a life for himself, but can't get a job anywhere because who the fuck is going to hire someone with a conviction in this economy? When the average job has ten people applying for it, the guy with the conviction who isn't "automatically excluded" isn't going to get hired, and can't work most jobs anyway, since even out-of-public-sight-back-room-warehouse jobs require background checks.
Of course, those fucks are luckly they're not allowed to work a warehouse job, I should know.
Edit: Rachel Maddow used a good quote, "a person is not as bad as his worst deed" While I'm not sure it's true in every case, there's a romantic tone there, and I kind of like that line.
