Was that edgy Kid Iccarus bullshit a prank from AFD?
I think that was an actual project Retro Studios (I think?) was working on and IGN wouldn't shut up about, but it seems to have fallen apart since then.
Some english games magazine claimed they had the actual code for getting Mortal Kombat fatalities with blood on the snes.
I totally fell for it, but since back in the day game mags were pretty pricey i was hella pissed off.
I just wanted it to be real so bad, that the apparent bullshit of the trick to get it to work eluded me.
(they claimed they were on the ROM but could only be activated on "older" cartidges, which were made of heavier plastic. So step one was taping a penny onto the cartridge...yeah.)
Dvorak's drunk driving on the information superhighway bit was good.
Gaming wise, EGM said Battletoads and Double Dragon would combine back in the early 90s, and when they later did it was awesome. Also there was supposedly a secret code that, when entered during a cutscene, would resurrect a certain FF7 character.
Wasn't that futuristic Zelda game hoax an April Fools from a couple of years back?
Shiiit, I remember that - big old semi-steampunkish sort of thing, wasn't it? All I remember from that was that Zelda makes appearances on the telly and Link had to do a crossdressing infiltration bit.
I liked when Blizzard announced the ability to order Panda Express in-game, through Pandaren NPC's of course. I believe it was poking fun at EQ2's real service with Pizza Hut.
It was "Pandaren Express," otherwise I would have believed it.
If that had been real I would have probably dumped hundreds of dollars into it. I hate Pizza Hut, but I LOVE some overly processed American-style orange chicken.
I thought the code for unlocking the Naboo Starfighter in the original Rogue Squadron was fake, considering the game came out way before Episode 1 was released.
I can't remember where I heard this AFJ but it was something along the lines of playing as Mortal Kombat characters on NBA Jam... I think I wasted $10 worth of quarters at a local Putt Putt before I finally gave up... April Fools is a racketeering business more than it is a joke...
Can't remember if they had started this in their April issue or not, but WAAAAY back, after Mean Machines Sega became Official Sega Magazine, they had this 'competition' to find Rankles, a 'green otter with sparkly ankles', who, in their artwork, was basically a green Knuckles with bulbous ankles; they basically said whoever could find him in Sonic 3 would win £1 millon.
...Imagine their surprise when someone, through the use of the level select code, found a way to glitch out Launch Base Act 2 in such a way that you started underwater. Imagine their continued surprise when they found this: Wait a second... do I win?
Boy did they have to backpedal after that...

Or copy a pokemon to another cartridge by shutting off the source game about 1/2 a second before it says "trade complete" so the other side thinks it's complete and the source hasn't registered it yet? Yeah, we distributed so many Mews that way..
And then you do it wrong and get stuck with two Ratatas.
Or male Nidorans
I almost cried when I tried to clone my Game Genie-acquired Mew for my friend and found we both had a Nidoran and the Mew was gone forever
Especially because I lost my Game Genie not long after I got Mew
I did find it again a few weeks later though
But for this reason, every Nidoking I've ever had has been named Mewkiller

World of Burgercraft (With the Frostshock shake!)
Starcraft 2s "New Unit" the Tauren Marine
And the Bard "Hero class" with a Guitar Hero playstyle.

My favorite one was the new attunement chart for the Black Temple that was like 4 pages and 50 steps long
So we've had a Starcraft unit and a WoW class. I'm betting on a Diablo 3 class from Blizzard for April Fools.
We've had a lot more than that. I can't find a good list for it, but they also at various times announced Two-headed Ogres and Wisps as playable races in WoW.
Slashdot doesn't do their own april fools shit. Instead they spend the entire goddamn day reporting what everyone else did for april fools. Might as well not read Slashdot on that day.
Oh yeah, that side of things is frustrating too. I said it earlier, April Fools' for me is now just a case of trawling through the news and seeing what's most likely to catch someone out, rather than actually believing anything I read. Some put effort in, some just put some nouns on a dartboard and pick their story that way, but it's just not fun any more.
Years and years ago, PSM magazine was the best at April Fool's stuff. Especially the one year when they did a preview of a supposed AO game that was basically Tomb Raider, but naked. Complete with fake screenshots and getting an artist (I think Robert DeJesus, he always did a ton of stuff for PSM) to do lots of artwork.
Warcraft: Instance Preview - Silly new instance somehow involving Arthas and/or Illidan doing something wacky and out of character. Probably involving
Diablo: New Class - Holy Crusader. Will involve multiple references to Monty Python's Holy Grail. Holy Hand Grenade and so-forth.
Guessing Blizzard's April Fool's stuff is often more fun for my then trying to figure out what their announcements for BlizzCon will be.
Blizzard General: Introducing the long awaited new Blizzard MMO! Craft of CraftCraft! First classes revealed! Knitter, lamp shade decorator, cupcake baker. Classes will have paths leading to specialty classes. IE Knitter after 51 points in the Threading tree, become a Needle Point Specialist!
I can't see Blizzard letting an April 1st go by without somehow bringing up the "Diablo 3 is too colourful" joke. Maybe some fake screenshots and graphics settings to show how you can 'darken' it or something.
edit: Falcon, thanks dude. Now my brain is bleeding.

I agree, I would have bought that game in a second.

Was quite surprised when it actually worked!

Seems like if they were really going down the tubes they'd announce it more than 5 days before the execution date.
Yes.
It looks fun.
And it's nice to have a change of pace.

EDIT: God damn this thing is funnier than I remembered.
I just got a big 'replace boat with train=profit' vibe from it.
Back on blizzard who can forget the two headed ogre race
I'm surprised that wasn't something that Tolkien actually wrote about.
Also, April Fools is so lame.
It's what made me stop reading slashdot years ago. :x
OMG PONIES!!
The single-minded air of "PFFFFFFFFFT should've used Linux" put me off slashdot.
We've had a lot more than that. I can't find a good list for it, but they also at various times announced Two-headed Ogres and Wisps as playable races in WoW.
A buddy of mine has the name "I<3Microsoft" on Slashdot. He gets instantly downvoted whenever he posts something.
And then keep on not reading.
Holy fuck yes. It is annoying when I'm reading them, and they quote someone elses post and I don't bloody see it anywhere.
