Let's Play Rule of Rose - Completed - 11 sets

Hello this is Katrinonus and welcome to Let’s Play Rule of Rose!

ruleofrose.jpg

This is my first LP for Penny Arcade, although I’ve done quite a few already on my YouTube Channel. I have never finished this game before so it will be a nice experience, however I have seen a playthrough once before. I do expect to get very lost as we go along, but hey that’s half the fun, isn’t it?

A Bit About Rule of Rose

Rule of Rose is a survival horror video game for the PlayStation 2. The game was developed by Punchline and released in 2006.

Set in 1930s England, the plot revolves around a nineteen-year-old girl named Jennifer, who becomes trapped in a world ruled by young girls who have established a class hierarchy called the Red Crayon Aristocrats. The game has been compared to survival horror games Silent Hill and Haunting Ground, due to the psychological horror used throughout and that the main character is accompanied by a canine companion.

Rule of Rose garnered mixed reviews from many publications upon its release. The game was also the subject of a moderate amount of controversy due to its use of violence and sexuality amongst some of its underage, female characters.
Cheers, Wiki! You’ve served your purpose well.

This is a very beautiful game and I’m happy that I’m getting a good chance to play it again. Very creepy and hey if things go well, I think you can expect to see me continue doing this.

Hope you guys enjoy it!

Oh wow, you are a brave soul.

I tried to finish this game, but I only got halfway. The combat is so wretched, despite how ...odd the story is.

I'll blue dot this for now, maybe I'll get around to watching the videos a little later.

Yay, a Katrinous LP! I loled at the wimpy punch. One of the things that infuriated me about the game is how much the main character just sits back and takes it. I understand that the creators wanted Jennifer to seem helpless before the children, but the way the game seems to portray it is that Jennifer 'won't' rather than 'can't', and that makes no sense with an adult protagonist.
I know that given the context of the story is some sort of bizarre adventure through Jens memories (or something), but you don't know that until the last bit of the game and it's jarring the whole way through.

I think it'd be creepier with more children of the corn and less jump cuts. There's only so much that can be left to imagination. But still a delightfully freaky game.

Also Kat, you've made my wall of hilariously out of context quotes.

Interesting, to say the least. I remember reading about this game and curious as to why it was so controversial. So I guess I'll keep watching in order to find out.

Ah likely I will. I am addicted to LPs for some reason and your page seems to have plenty. Course I need to pace myself of watching a lot of videos by one person in a row, or else my mental voice starts sounding like them.

..Like it sounds like Helloween right now. Actually I'd consider that an upgrade from my normal voice. Anyways, welcome again. Helloween is a class act so his friends are our friends.

More LPs! Fun, fun. I'm glad I get to see this game, as I remember it from magazines, but never had the desire to play it for myself.

Not that I would be able to. The first time a door would've gotten pulled/pushed closed on me, I would have been done. Seriously, no, game, you should not do that.

New set is hopefully going up today. However, it's rather long. Whoops. Although I'm having uploading problems currently and so it might be later than I expected. Stupid YouTube uploading times. They are ridiculous. I've spent half the day uploading 3 parts and that doesn't count processing time.

If they aren't up tonight, they'll be up tommorrow for sure.

Yeah, I remember getting far enough into it and then constantly running into these weird ass giant chickens. I loathed the combat, but I suppose it makes sense considering that you're supposed to be playing as a child. Fascinating direction though. Maybe I'll just boot this up again...

Is it just me or is the incoming announcement tone the NBC jingle?

Also I approve of your Flight of the Valkyries alarm.

I find the ambiance of the game interesting, though you're right, it did run a bit long. You have a good voice for it though. Quite relaxing. I'll keep watching, so I look forward to more.

The gameplay seems pretty poor, and I hope the pacing picks up because I am curious as to what the hell is just going on there. Jennifer really is a complete wimp. Though I guess it is an inversion of most horror games where you play the unrealistically durable badass who can feel all better with a health spray (RE4, SH:H, etc).

Jennifer seems to be a genuine anti-hero, her skills, courage and ability all seem to be so far below average thats its difficult to imagine her successfully opening a packet of chips without assistance. Its truly impossible to imagine her doing anything heroic.

Man this game is annoying. I am annoyed after having watched all three sets. This seems to be the way all horror games affect me... they just grate on me rather than evoke anything resembling fear with their crappy combat and endless hallways full of doors.

The only good thing I can say about this game is that it made me want to punch children.

    Oh wait...

Just caught up on the last two sets. Man, just when I thought the game would stop getting creepy (the pulling the doors closed thing lost the scare factor quite rapidly), the greys showed up.

    Eeeeeeesh.

Given Jessica's situation, her actions are pretty rational. No one wants to be her friend and you can't exactly run anywhere as you're on a goddamn airship. What are you going to do, murder everyone? She's weak as hell and already has been overpowered when outnumbered. Obviously she doesn't even remember why she's there, so there's the confusion aspect too.

She truly is a very unlucky girl. Like I said before, the premise is intriguing, but so far the pacing is terrible.

Also, hope you feel better, Kat.
