Cell Phone - Changing Networks and Dropping a Line

I currently have a family plan with 2 phone lines with Verizon. I don't use my phone at all, so I want to drop my line and port my wife's over to AT&T. We currently passed our 2 year mark with Verizon so technically, we are out of contract.

How do I go about porting the one number over and dropping the other without incurring penalties? Do I switch them both over and then change the plan during the 30 day grace period? Should I drop my line now, and then port my wife's number to AT&T. I just want to get the timing right so I don't get penalties from Verizon by somehow initiating a new contract or something.

Any insight would be appreciated.

I would log on to your account and make sure that you are out of contract. If you are then all you do it go to At&t and tell them you want to port over to them. At&t will call a third party middle man to get Verizon to release the numbers. Those new number should then be ported to At&t. Verizon should send you a last bill with the prorated amount for the month. It should be no fuss unless you are still in contract with Verizon. If that the case you will be charge ($150 per line - 5 buck for each month done in contract).

you get an AT&T account and transfer the number you want to keep, and then the moment it's activated, call verizon and cancel the other number.... should have no issues at all.
