Mario Party games are easy for anyone to pick up - a six year old will have no problem. They also have a huge element of chance in them, so that anyone has a shot to win, even if they stink.
hmm you might be right, but im thinking Mario Kart would be just as hard for a 6 year old, if not harder (my friends can barely play it when they try unless they play it lots). The Star wars Lego game was pretty confusing even for me too so i'd avoid that. I found the Wii Sports to be real fun and easy, maybe the new Resort one is just as easy and fun, id give that a shot..
Lego <blank> games are repetitive, but easy pick up and play for kids.
My 6 yr. old nephew loves Ghostbusters and Punch-out, and apparently has no problems with either.
There's also Boomblox, which is pretty easy. World of Goo, probably depends on the kid. It can get kind of complicated, but a good parent-kid bonding game maybe?
MySims possibly.
E: Also might be worth grabbing a GameCube controller and looking into the GC library for more kids games. They don't care about graphics it's all about fun.

i think boombox is a bad idea. A 6 year old trying to hold a button down, swinging a remote at the tv, and releasing the button all in a smooth motion in order to strategically cause a chain-reaction based on physics sounds ridiculous.
I might recommend Paper Mario, it was simple and fun.
Wii Music seems like pretty failproof fun for a kid. Maybe something on the Virtual Console like the original Punch Out. Maybe Castlevania or Bonk's Adventure for a boy.
Edit: The Lego Star Wars game is good, but the kid will need supervision to finish it. There are some frustrating parts where you and a partner both have to stand on certain spots to get shields to go down, doors to open, etc.
I really can't recommend Pajama Sam: Don't Fear the Dark enough. My 4 year old does well with it, although he needs some help, I imagine a 6 year old would have a ton of fun with it.
I'm not sure they'll have it connected to the internet, they're out in the middle of nowhere. He did like Wii resort when we played but he kept running at the tv swinging like a madman when we played the sword game. Which was hilarious, but not that effective.
Mario Kart might work or Punch-Out. Does Punch-Out have an easy mode? I think it might get too difficult for him pretty quickly. I'll look into Pajama Sam - just found out the kid is actually 5.
Punch Out is not recommended, it would indeed be too much for him.
As far as internet things and downloading games like Mario Bros. and World of Goo, I figure you could open it ahead of time and download the stuff onto it before giving it to him. Plus it'll be all set up already so he can sit right down and get into it (past setting the time/date and such).

That might be kind of hard for a 6 year old. But they might enjoy Mario Kart if they can keep it on the road!
Also I suggest buying some Virtual Console games such as Super Mario Bros. Get them hooked on those classics.
Also Wiiware like World of Goo which is about building a tower of goo balls, little kids love building stuff and knocking it over.

My girlfriend's little brothers love Endless Ocean as well..
Not really to do all the stuff but just swimming around.

For download, I'd put in Kirby's Adventure and Neves Plus.
