I hope yall can help me. Well recently my computer broke. The problem was that I have over 100gb of valuable information on my hard drive. My brother has a computer so I decided to install my hard drive into his computer and hook him up to the network to send my stuff to my new laptop or even back it up using his computer. Now the problem occurs when I try to enter my user name. When I enter the hard drive using my brothers computer I can get into all the other users except the owners log in (me). It says Access denied. I don't understand how I am not able to get into my own files (where my valuable info is at). If anyone know how to get past that help me. There is no password on the owner log in so the access denied is confusing me. Plus as I mentioned earlier it is being accessed using another computer. Please help.
What's worse than a cold toilet seat? A warm toilet seat. There's only one way short of magic it could have gotten warm. At first, you're almost thankful it's warm, then you get to thinking... this is the result of another person's ass-warmth.
I assume this is present on all systems using NTFS - check the folder properties->security and add full access to the admin; you might have to be logged in as admin to do that.

I'm not sure I understand what NTFS is. Also I don't understand where i'm checking the folders properties.

NTFS is the file system, you can see it when checking the partition properties in "my computer".
You can check properties of most things by right clicking on it and selecting... well, properties - it should be the last thing listed in the context menu.
...you aren't using a Mac or something, are you?

For some reason I forgot what NTFS was. But no I am using a PC with windows xp. But when I check the properties of my folders it says it isn't anything there, I know other wise. The route I go to get to my files is
my computer->f:/->documents and settings->owner... ACCESS DENIED
If I were to do properties of that folder it says nothing is there. That is the problem. I don't understand why it says nothing is there. Not even the size of the user, NOTHING. It was a problem when my computer did work though. Other users couldn't access my files even if I give administrative powers. I'm at a lost. Unless I fix my computer which I think is a motherboard problem I am not ever going to use that again.
I do question if I make my hard drive he main drive will it boot up? Then I would have to drag my files to my brothers hard drive then make his hard drive the main hard drive. But that is alot. I know it is software related so I would love to not reopen the computer twice to get my files but if there is no other way that is what I would have to do. But I also don't want to damage my brothers computer. Please help. Thanks in advance.

In XP Home, you have to boot to safe mode and login as the hidden administrator account in order to change the permissions and ownership of that folder and all folders underneath it if you want to access them. Restart the computer and hit f8 before it boots and you will get a menu with boot options. Choose safe mode or safe mode with networking and then when the login screen comes up, choose the administrator account. There is no password (a big mistake on ms's part imo but I digress). Login, navigate to that folder, choose properties, and then security tab and take ownership from there in the advanced section.
Thanks for the help. That last comment helped a lot although it was sort of vauge I figured everything i needed out and fixed it so I can traverse my things. Again thanks for everything.
